Bipartisan deal on Immigration and Ukraine at risk of collapse as Trump presses Senate Republicans to walk away.
Republicans whine endlessly about immigration policy while simultaneously tanking bipartisan legislation designed to deal with immigration?
Trump said, "the Senate is better off not making a deal, even if it means the country will close up for a while." Of course, he did not propose alternate policy options.
"The border is a very important issue for Donald Trump, and the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that
he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Joe Biden for it is really appalling." ~Mitt Romney
How dumb does Trump think the GOP base is?

Until some actual text is placed on the table, we can't really assess what is being proposed much less who to blame for it, but keep in mind hidden agenda's cut both ways.
Both sides are anticipating it will be killed and are already laying the foundations to blame the other side. Now that's statesmanship!

There you go with your "both sides" bunk, after Lindsey Graham speaks out about not killing it and Trump is definitely killing it. One way for it to be killed is by not coming to a textual agreement, which is being done, and the Repubs have spoken out very clearly that it's Trumpolina who is killing it.
Trump killed it for a campaign issue.

Lindsey Graham speaks out about not killing it - CO

LOL. Lindsey RINO is about as much a Republican as Manchin is a Democrat. He is about my least favorite Republican Senator next to Mitt.
Lindsey was being interviewed about some bill he was the actual sponsor and the interviewer quoted some provision from the bill. Lindsey said that was not part of it, but said he would check into. Meanwhile I googled up the bill, and the interviewer was right, Lindsey did not know about fairly significant feature of a bill he sponsored.
Graham was also famous during the Russiagate hoax that as Chairman of the Judiciary committee, he was going to call so and so before his committee and get to the bottom of some egregious claim. Lots of promises but never held one hearing that I recall. Standard politician, say what you have to at the time with no deeply held principles, that is Graham.
So what Graham has to say about anything is practically worthless.

That doesn't disqualify his political assessment. He has enough experience in the legislature for his assessment to be worth noting, RINO or nor.
Would you mind telling us what the fairly significant feature of the bill was thatg Lindsay didn't know about, and how you knew Graham didn't know, rather than skirting that issue? Enquiring minds want to know! :)

It was several months ago and there is just so much news flying around that I just I can't recall the details other than Lindsey's ignorance of his own bill. This was an interview on Fox News so was probably fake anyway.

Here's what former law enforcement officials have to say about the border:
https://twitter.com/SenRonJohnson/status/175060486...The threat we call out today is new and unfamiliar. In its modern history the U.S. has never suffered an invasion of the homeland, and, yet, one is unfolding now. Military age men from across the globe, many from countries or regions not friendly to the United States, are landing in waves on our soil by the thousands – not by splashing ashore from a ship or parachuting from a plane bur rather by foot across a border that has been accurately advertised around the world as largely unprotected with ready access granted.”
“It would be difficult to overstate the danger represented by the presence inside our borders of what is comparatively a multi division army of young single adult males from hostile nations and regions whose background, intent, or allegiance is completely unknown. Bbbut it's mostly families crossing the border, you stupid Trumpies! Terrorists never come over!!!
Say, let's ask the San Diego field office what they think:
https://twitter.com/BillMelugin_/status/1716494605...NEW: Per CBP sources, CBP’s San Diego field office sent out this internal intel bulletin on Friday, alerting officers that Hamas, Hezbollah, & Palestinian Islamic Jihad foreign fighters inspired by the Israel conflict may be encountered at the U.S. southern border. Gives officers instructions on key indicators to look for, including single, military aged males w/ undetermined travel plans. And once they encounter an agent, count on them saying the magic amnesty words so they're paroled into the country.
I really, really, really don't want to be in a position to say
I told you so to this board.

There has been an increase in illegal immigration mostly because of the strong U.S. job market.
The MAGA solution to this is to fund 10% of a border wall (that would only reduce illegal immigration by 10% if fully built), prioritize detention (but only increase the number of detention beds by 20%), and demand no funding for alternatives to detention (migrant services, shelter, food, more staff to process claims).
The Senate bipartisan solution begins with creating an authority to expel migrants when border agents record a spike in illegal crossings, making asylum screenings harder to pass, and expanding the expedited removal process.
MAGA wants an open border and opposes any solution, so Trump can campaign on the chaos. Some governors are giving free trips to Northern states, and this just encourages more illegal immigration.

If it weren't for Greg Abbott's visionary program to share the immigrant flow with the self declared sanctuary cities, then we would not be talking about reform at all. That is why the resulting act will be named in his honor as the "Greg Abbott Restore our Sovereignty Act", GARSA for short.

Of course they do. It is a vote getter. It enrages folks like you and Mike. And there is no downside for them because they know they already have your vote every 2 years.
Johnson apparently is going to wimp-out with Trump and give him his campaign issue, rather than do his duty to his voters.
https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/01/26/c...Well, I suspect I can live with the status quo better than you can. As pointed out already, even if Trump wins, he won't be able to do anything. He'll never get 60 votes in the Senate for his ludicrous ideas (like a wall in the middle of a river).
Plus Putin could finally get his victory in Ukraine. Way to go, Reps!
This is your best shot to get some of what you want, but you're going to squander it in the name of absolutism and Trump. Many Reps are just as bad as the progressive wing of the Dems... They want it all, or they torpedo everything.

... enraged like you and mike? How about over half the US population expressing concerns, big concerns with the open border situation.
Lets start with that word open. I know you don't like that term, and I will grant that in some ways it is not technically open, but regular folks including progessives and even some dem politicians use that word because... eyes.
And about wanting to wait for a Trump Deal. Many would turn down anything now just to keep the issue going as you say, but I think the vast majority of people who see border security as an issue would take a good plan anytime one is presented, regardless of who is President. They are savvy enough to evaluate a proposal themselves without waiting to hear what Trump has to say about it, they just want the problem fixed.
And vote getter? I think Trump will get the MAGA vote period, so the votes in play would be the uncommitted center. And when an uncommitted voter looks at the border mess and concludes that issue is more likely to be solved under Trump than Biden, that may be seen as responding to a command from Trump to wait. But that is just wishful thinking by dems since those in the uncommitted center are by no means Trump sycophants.

Umm, what?
Trump promised a southern border wall paid for by Mexico. FAILED.
Trump promised an infrastructure bill. FAILED.
Trump promised healthcare to replace the ACA. FAILED.
Trump promised to bring back manufacturing. FAILED.
Trump promised to grow the economy by 4%. FAILED.
Trump promised to renegotiate the Iran deal. FAILED.
Trump promised to remove all undocumented immigrants. FAILED.
Trump promised to bring down the trade deficit. FAILED.
Trump promised to bring back coal. FAILED.
Anyone who believes Trump will solve immigration is an idiot. If the bill that will be introduced next week is discarded by Johnson at the direction of Trump, you certainly won't see cooperation or compromise by democrats should, God forbid, Trump retake the White House.

Because the MAGA crowd lives in a tightly controlled media bubble, they can somehow believe that Trump has solved the problem and been the greatest POTUS we've ever had, when objectively he is absolutely one of the worst, and may, in the longer view of history (should objective history exist in the future) he could well be the WORST. He has the distinction of trying to overthrow our democracy.

Let's hear from some Republicans who actually know what's in the bill, shall we?...
Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), the GOP’s lead negotiator on a deal pairing immigration changes with assistance to Ukraine said:
"Right now, they’re all functioning off of internet rumors of what’s in the bill, and many of them are false."
"It is interesting. Four months ago we Republicans locked arms together and said, We’re not going to give you money for this. (Helping the people of Ukraine)
We want a change in immigration law. Now, a few months later, when we’re finally getting to the end, they’re like, Oh, just kidding. I actually don’t want a change in law because it’s a presidential election year."
"We all have an oath to the Constitution, and we have a commitment to say, ‘We’re gonna do whatever we can to be able to secure the border,’
It is our constitutional obligation to be able to secure our country as fast as we can secure our country."
Or Sen. Mitt Romney...
"The border is a very important issue for Donald Trump, and the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that
he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Joe Biden for it is really appalling."
Immigration has been Trump’s signature issue, dating back to his first presidential campaign news conference on June 16, 2015.
Trump was the first president in 28 years to lose re-election.
He lost the most jobs of any president since Herbert Hoover.
He cannot lose his signature issue also!
