I recently posted this to the BRK board, and Jim suggested that this might be a more appropriate venue for this request. So here it is ...

I'm looking for an optimal source of historical stock data. I'd been using the free RCH Stock Market Functions interface to Yahoo Finance, but that has broken down under the challenges posed by Yahoo!, purportedly since its acquisition by Verizon. And, of course, the generous and brilliant Randy Harmelink is no longer among us.

I believe Jim suggested a relatively inexpensive provider awhile back — Pinnacle perhaps. I just came across what appears to be a comprehensive data source called Wisesheets that includes nice display facilities for both Excel and Google Sheets, and only costs $60/year. Here's a link:

I use Tiingo's API to download EOD prices of a few stocks and ETFs. The free version is limited to 500 unique tickers per month. The adjusted prices are accurate, and the tickers I need have always been available.

alphavantage.co and stooq.com also have EOD price data. Intraday price and fundamental data have different sources.

Wisesheets looks interesting. Sounds similar to some other start-ups that are getting the data directly from the annual reports, but coverage might be spotty (some tickers not covered). All the data vendors seem to have some mistakes in their data, and so it's a question of how many mistakes.

I use Tiingo to get the EOD prices of stocks that googlefinance() does not have, or symbols that go to the wrong stock (BDJ is one such).


GF also does not have the symbols for NAV of CEFs, but Tiingo does.

I have not had a good experience with Wisesheets. I subscribed, then my Login wouldn't work, the password reset doesn't work and if you call the help line it goes to voicemail and nobody returns your call. Pretty useless!
