History of International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900's - a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

1908
Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

IWD history about

1909
In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on February 28. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

It's sad it has taken this long for women to reach this point. Over 100 years, and we're still not at parity between genders. When I was in grad school, there were about 12 of us in the physics PhD program (we all had to take the same classes, so we pretty much knew everyone else). Only two were female. From my observations in the workplace, there are a larger percentage of female engineers, but it's still not at parity. And a lot of those lady engineers were Asian or Indian.

As far as we have come -and we have come far- we still have a long way to go.

Congratulations, yes you did a fine job raising your daughter to be independent and a go getter. A strong father figure is important when raising a daughter.
