Charged with heresy, Galileo was forced to attempt to explain the truth about how the solar system truly existed, in direct conflict with the 'accepted' consensus that the Earth was at the center of everything. As told by the church for centuries.

He faced death, but was 'only' given a life time sentence of house confinement. His books were banned, and he was not allowed to publish any further works.

Dunno, but it sure seems like a lot of the vacuous inanities of four centuries ago persist in the here and now. By lots of air-headed national leaders, and several opinion writers on public boards and blogs.
