I don't know how closely the US media covered Dien Bien Phu. That was in the mid 50s, and a French disaster, rather than USian.
I sure as heck remember the siege of Khe Sanh. It was on the news nearly every evening. I remember them showing film of how the base was resupplied: a Herc barely touching the runway, with the back door open, and a chute pulling the pallet of supplies out of the plane, then the Herc immediately grabbing altitude again. I said "cool!"

Which airstrip, surrounded by enemy territory, the one in Nam, or the one in Afghanistan? The bug out from Afghanistan was one of his nibs' "arty" deals. It was actually executed in a more planned manner, taking a couple months longer, than the "cut and run" that his nibs wanted.
