And not just any kid, but a relative (nephew, I believe).

Quite a contrast to another well known family with a disabled sibling - the Kennedys. In her younger days, Rosemary was included in the family activities as much as possible. After a lobotomy left her much worse off, her family made sure she was cared for until her passing in her 80s, with her remaining siblings at her side. In between was groundbreaking legislation protecting the rights of those with disabilities and the founding of the Special Olympics in her honor.

I’m not going to pretend the Kennedy family was perfect, because they weren’t. But this is one area they got right, and did so in multiple ways.

As the father of a disabled child, this one hits close to home for me.
