Just announced on Truth Social:
After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.'s book, "Hillbilly Elegy," became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond....

I wanted Glenn Youngkin, as that would have nudged VA closer to Trump and if Trump wins Virginia, it's game over.

The same J.D. Vance who called Trump an "idiot," said he was "reprehensible, " and once said Trump could be "America's Hitler?"

Well, sure, that sounds about right.

commonone: "The same J.D. Vance who called Trump an "idiot," said he was "reprehensible, " and once said Trump could be "America's Hitler?"

He also said there was "definitely an element of Donald Trump’s support that has its basis in racism or xenophobia." JD Vance

He got that 100% correct!

Any MAGA's here know what the word Oligarchy means?

I remember Kamala's kind words for Biden before the VP pick.

Yup. A blistering attack calling him a racist. As with most of those posts, they're not the flex they think they are.

On CNN they had one of Kamala's former (she's had several) communication managers basically saying that Vance was the pick that would demolish Harris in a debate.

Spin away, but she didn't call him "America's Hitler."

It makes a fair amount of sense, both for the race that Trump wants to run, and for what he personally wants in a Veep.

As for the race, Vance speaks MAGA very well - probably better than any of the other options. That makes him a good asset for turning out the base, and covering bread and butter events and press. Trump and his campaign also probably realize that this race is going to be won or lost in the Rust Belt - and Vance brings at least some geographic connection to that area to balance Trump's purely East Coast geography. Plus, he's super young for this position. That's not going to be a bad thing, in a race with two very elderly folks at the top of the ticket.

As for a Veep, Trump loves dominance and loyalty. He wants to be in charge, and he wants his underlings to have no one but Trump to thank for their position. Vance fills that bill - unlike Pence (or Rubio, if he had been chosen), Vance doesn't really have a base of political power independent of Trump. He had no political career prior than a few years ago, and his political success is entirely due to Trump. So there's not going to be any "going off the reservation" from his Veep.

This is also a really confident pick. This is a pick that fits with a campaign where Arizona and Georgia aren't really much in play any more, but New Hampshire and Minnesota are.

After Trump's ear was nicked, JD Vance was one of the the most incendiary, of the GOP attack dogs. He blamed Biden, all democrats, and floated an inane theory that Biden is responsible for the shooting.

Vance wrote: “Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.”

Sets the tone.

He'll be in it up to his eyeballs with the army of right wing lawyers who are already positioned to contest the election if Trump manages to lose.

Hypothetical:

Trump dies from a stroke or heart attack or something similar. He's old. He has early signs of dementia. His diet is worse than mine.

So Vance takes the reins of the campaign. Does Biden have a better or worse chance against Vance under those conditions? How about Harris vs Vance, should Biden opt-out?

Yeah, nothing says "Man of the People" more than a venture capitalist.

What Trump wanted was an attack dog and no one else filled the bill. Rubio, Burgum, Haley? Nope, no chance. And Vance lies as much and as outrageously as Trump.

Besides, Jr signaled it was going to be Vance weeks ago.

Now this campaign is going to be anything but "toned down".

Buckle up, buttercups. This is going to get ugly.

It's been "ugly" since 2016 when the convict encouraged violence (e.g. "hit him" when people were escorted out of his rallies). Plus Jan 6. Etc.

I'm not sure if it will ever get back to "not ugly" within my lifetime.

Yeah, nothing says "Man of the People" more than a venture capitalist.

That's a great example of how Democrats sometimes lose the plot on the political divide these days, and the difference between left-wing and right-wing populism. Both involve the same basic working model of society - you have "the righteous People" versus "the corrupt Elite." But they differ on how to define those groups. Left-wing populism defines based on economic class - the righteous People are the poor and working class, and the Elites are economic elites that have a lot of money. Right-wing populism, though, defines based on values - the righteous People are those who esteem patriotism, the Nation, cultural pride, religious faith, and other non-bourgeois values, while the Elite are the ones who try to overrule the values of the People from their positions of cultural or political power.

It's lowbrow vs. highbrow, not rich vs. poor.

What Trump wanted was an attack dog and no one else filled the bill.

Yep - but that's one of the classic roles of the Veep on the ticket, to be an attack dog. To be the partisan while the top of the ticket tries to be the statesman. Trump has no interest in the latter, but he still recognizes that one of the strongest things a Veep can do for the ticket is be that attack dog.

Vance hit exactly the right note after the assassination attempt, from a campaign strategy. The top political use of the assassination attempt will be to feed into the "Strong vs. Weak" theming that Trump's been running for a year now. But the secondary use will be to try to delegitimize the Democratic strategy of demonizing Trump. That's the perfect line for the Veep - to try to paint the assassination as the end result of Democrats' recklessness in portraying Trump as utterly demonic, rather than simply someone they think would be bad for the country.

I don't know how a responsible American can overlook Trump intimation that if things don't go their way, 2nd Amendment people might have to deal with things.... only to have that echoed recently by some rightwing jackoff suggesting Project 2025 will be bloodless if the democrats don't oppose it.

The image of a frightened Trump screaming fight fight fight reminds me of a rabid dog shrieking at the world.

I hope God has time in his busy schedule to handle this.
