This is a link to a barrons article that discusses the sudden return to reality on the reported volume for BRK.A stock. Whatever changed, it definitely seems to be related to eliminating much of the "fake" volume that was being reported around fractional share trading. BRK.A was never trading anywhere near the reported volumes of the recent past. It seems like on June 7th something was changed.

Here's my wild-ass speculation given the timing. BRK.A gets a ton of press on 6/3 when the data glitch shows it down 99%. Those trades are busted but when it reopens it does trade up as high as $741,971 / share and it is unclear if those trades were busted or not (appears not). NYSE executives call in to BRK headquarters to apologize and make nice and when asked if there is anything they can do to restore confidence, Warren mentions that it does actually bother him that the reported volumes in BRK.A stock are so far from reality - can't something be done about that? Since I have you on the phone....?

4 days later Warren's annoyance is suddenly fixed... coincidence?

June 7 was the last day of trading T+2 for settlement. perhaps when they went to T+1 settlement, they also updated the code for volume.

But isn't all fractional share trading done internally at the brokers? NYSE, Nasdaq, etc. only trade in whole shares, AFAIK
