The democrats have a problem. A big one.
They're believing their own gaslighting.

Here's the next exhibit: Nancy Pelosi, on illegal immigration, Biden vs. Trump:

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/09/magazine/nancy-...

I don’t think we were clear enough by saying fewer people came in under President Biden than came under Donald Trump. It’s clarity of the message, and if that’s what Bernie’s talking about, and that’s what Joe Manchin’s talking about, we weren’t clear in our message as to what things are, then I agree with that. And that was one of the concerns I expressed about saying we haven’t put forth what was done. It’s our legacy, too.

Uhhhh, okay.
This is an example of having to manipulate the numbers, squint at them, then go out and say, "See? You can't believe your lyin' eyes".

I don't believe Pelosi believes "their own gaslighting." You can't change the past. If the past is an electoral liability, you have to frame it as best you can. She has to manage the post-election framing as best she can, and she can't go out there and burn the immigrant-advocate faction of the House by putting part of the blame on them. That in no way means that she isn't behind the scenes telling the folks who were pushing the party to advocate decriminalizing border crossings (for example) that those days are done.

Reading that interview, one thing that shines through beyond all else - Pelosi in intensely, primarily, and always focused on the House. That's her priority. That's her measure of how things are going. And since the Democrats are probably going to end up with not much change in the House (roughly the same seats as after the 2022 election), even after losing seats in the Senate and getting beaten in the Presidential race, she's framing that pretty positively. That's why she doesn't see a rebuke of the Democrats - her folks didn't get clobbered.
