David Brooks:
“How is it that half of America looks at Donald Trump and doesn’t find him morally repellent?” David Brooks asks. “He lies, cheats, steals, betrays, and behaves cruelly and corruptly, and more than 70 million Americans find him, at the very least, morally acceptable. Some even see him as heroic, admirable, and wonderful.”
It is rare that the right wingers on this board really praise Trump, because...how can you. They like his racism, misogyny, crassness and cruelty. But what can anyone honestly say about Trump's character that is positive, unless you are telling a lie.
He's the worst, and only the most deeply deluded of the MAGA crowd can't see this.

I think it is some combination of secret prejudices the right has had buried for a long time, and the partisan thought of "at least he's not a Democrat". I'm sure many think that the worst Republican is better than the best Democrat. A very distorted view, in my opinion, but I have no doubt many hold it.
The secret prejudices are self-explanatory. They've been given permission to let it all hang out now, by a POTUS that reflects that attitudes.

As long as those traits are focused on the "others". When the Beeb broadcast his speech about the DC shooting, they cut out the part where he started ranting about Minnesota being despoiled by Somalis. He's leveraging the shooting to turn up the xenophobia even higher, and that is what his base voted for.
