It's time for you to be okay with restricting illegal immigration: your " " thought leaders " " are giving you Official Air Cover to pretend you've always wanted a strong border.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/11/briefing/the-la...

The NYT is finally choosing to educate its readers on the scale of the illegal migration through the southern border:

1. . The immigration surge since 2021 has been the largest in U.S. history, surpassing even the levels of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Total net migration — the number of people coming to the country minus the number leaving — will likely exceed eight million people over the past four years, government statistics suggest. That number includes both legal and illegal immigration.
Never before has annual net migration been close to two million for an extended period, according to data from the Census Bureau and the Congressional Budget Office.

2. Even after adjusting for today’s larger population, the surge is slightly larger than that during the peak years of Ellis Island traffic

3. The share of the U.S. population born in another country has reached a record high as a result.

4. President Biden’s welcoming immigration policy has been the main reason for the recent surge.

5. More than half of net migration since 2021 has been among people who entered the country illegally

6. The unprecedented scale of recent immigration helps explain why the issue played such a big role in the 2024 election.

7. The recent immigration surge has probably ended.

I suppose a <golf claps> better late than never </golf clap> award is in order: it's not like this hasn't been obvious to anyone who spends time actually following real news (which, unfortunately for them, does exclude regular readers of the New York Times).

The real reason for this article is to start to signal to the average democrat coaster news reader that

(a) Hey, the rubes weren't lying after all
(b) This seems like a legit gripe
(c) This did actually affect the Presidential election to the detriment of democrats everywhere...so...

(d) Maybe it's time for some sanity on the border, lest democrats keep losing.
