In Trump's America, authoritarianism is a feature not a bug.

An international student in a graduate program at Tufts University was taken into federal custody on Tuesday outside an off-campus apartment building, according to the university’s president and an attorney representing the student.

The student, Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish citizen, had a valid student visa as a doctoral student at Tufts, according to a statement from her lawyer, Mahsa Khanbabai. Ms. Ozturk, who is Muslim, was heading out to break her Ramadan fast with friends Tuesday night when she was detained by agents from the Department of Homeland Security near her apartment in Somerville, Mass., Ms. Khanbabai said.

“We are unaware of her whereabouts and have not been able to contact her,” the lawyer said. “No charges have been filed against Rumeysa to date that we are aware of.”

The agent's were not uniformed officers but wore hoodies or masks. There's video in a link below.

Ozturk's crime? She wrote an op-ed.

This is some serious Nazi sh!t.

Well if you can fire people for gay marriage or climate change stances that are not in sync with the Left....I guess this is just the natural progression.

"Both sides do it" - as the gutless wonder used to say.

I wonder why they pick America.

Why not boycott America, and go to Tufts equivalent in Gaza, or Tehran, or Fallujah ?

I've never seen so many people at Powderhouse Park. There were about 300 people at the 250th anniversary of the Powder Alarm. Today, over 2000 people protested the arrest of a Fulbright Scholar.

This arrest took 6 agents and surveillance over two days. It could have been done with a simple letter. The crime seems to be writing an op-ed, or passing out pamphlets, or having the wrong photos. All of which is probably protected first amendment speech. But we don't know, because the government is avoiding due process.

This is senseless and counterproductive. Spending thousands of dollars when a few dollars could achieve the same outcome. The pro-Palestine protests last year were small (less than 100 students at Tufts). The protest today at Powderhouse Park was over 2000 people, many middle-aged and not students. These senseless arrests are destroying mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Fulbright is rolling over in his grave.

More than 2,000 rally in solidarity with Tufts student detained by immigration authorities, Updated March 26, 2025 (behind a paywall)
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security asserted Ozturk “engaged in support of Hamas,” a US-designated terror group behind the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the conflict in Gaza, but did not provide evidence of that claim.
This article includes many quotes from shocked neighbors.
“WTF?? Hands off my neighbors.”
“You can’t just nab people off the sidewalk and throw them in a car and take them away, and expect anyone who’s seen it to be alright afterwards.”

Two thousand rallied in Powder house Park to protest her arrest? The place commemorating one of the first steps over the line by General Gage and his British troops in Boston. Seven months later, he tried it again, sending a contingent of British regulars to another day of infamy in Lexington and Concord. And then, a few months after that as colonials surrounded Boston and Gage’s troops, he sent an even larger force up the slopes of a hill we call Bunker.

2000 protested in Powder House Park today, protesting the actions of a president who is acting the King.

Does he even know the sentiments and history he is stirring up……… in THAT place?

More from the We-Want-to-lose-in-2028 Republicans.

They now want to give Dearborn back, and then wonder why they lost Michigan.

They aren't get *one* extra vote by going after these Pro Hamas immigrants who can't even find a life in their home countries and had to come to the Superior America for education and life.

Had they laid off or lent an ear to this cohort, not only would Dearborn be solidified but this growing constituency could've been a nice top off elsewhere too, especially in school districts and states. These people make good allies because they still believe in parental right and certain traditions and structures.

Another win for Democrats.

Mind you in personal life and in business and politics: Trump loves being used. He's surrounded by users.

And he still doesn't get it.

On a side note I'm curious to see how much the Establishment makes AOC sellout on *certain* things. She went from "no" to a tearful "neutral" on Israel's iron dome. I give her points for being smart----I just hope she doesn't go all the way and be owned like so many American politicians are.

I watched Little Marco reply to the reporter’s question about the seizure of the Tuft’s grad student. He spewed a lot of generalities but said absolutely nothing about what specifically this student had done to warrant being snatched off the street and whisked directly into detention some 1,500 miles away. If he had any real evidence, I have no doubt he would have noted it.

I read the op-ed coauthored by the student. It is thoughtful and measured. It never mentions Hamas.

The video of the student being arrested absolutely sickens me. I woke up several times last night thinking about it. The terrorists in the video are the ones wearing masks and hoodies. Disgusting.

We are now a country in which people who have committed no crime (except, apparently “thought crimes”) can be snatched off the street by masked men and disappeared.

Anyone who supports this behavior is an accomplice.

Anyone who knows this behavior is evil but doesn’t protest it is a coward.

MisterFungi: He spewed a lot of generalities but said absolutely nothing about what specifically this student had done to warrant being snatched off the street and whisked directly into detention some 1,500 miles away.

According to Rubio, if you "create a ruckus" that's enough for the Trump Secret Police to kidnap you off the street.

How a single co-authored op-ed asking the university to acknowledge that the "Palestinian people of Gaza’s rights under the Genocide Convention are under a 'plausible' risk of being breached" and drawing a comparison to events in Gaza with the university's "decision in February 1989 to divest from South Africa under apartheid" is creating a ruckus is a puzzler.

Here's her co-authored op-ed: https://www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2024/03/4ftk27s...

The aggressive enforcement actions are because the Thought Police are unhappy. Anyone who Rubio disagrees with, even years ago, is at risk. An invited dinner guest to Rubio's house, with unacceptable views, will be imprisoned in Rubio's cold cellar. Not asked to leave. Just thrown down the cellar stairs. This is unAmerican, and uncivilized. It violates rights to free speech and due process, as U.S. Constitutional protections apply even to noncitizens. The image of America as a civilized law-abiding country is being shattered.

Tufts student was not notified her visa was revoked shortly before masked ICE agents arrested her, defense says, Updated March 28, 2025 (behind paywall)
"The Trump administration revoked the visa of a Tufts graduate student on March 21 but never notified her before masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents swarmed her on a Somerville sidewalk Tuesday and took her into custody, records show. Once Rümeysa Öztürk was in ICE custody, her friends, her attorney, and the Turkish consulate could not locate her for 24 hours, during which she suffered an asthma attack, according to a new court filing Friday by her attorneys."
“Arrest and detention are not a necessary or usual consequence of the revocation of a visa,” the attorneys wrote. “But like the revocation of her visa, her arrest and detention are designed to silence her, punish her for her speech and ensure that other students will be chilled from expressing pro-Palestinian viewpoints.”

FIRST AMENDED PETITION FOR WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS AND COMPLAINT
Case: Ozturk v. Hyde
1:25-cv-10695 | U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts
Filed Date: March 25, 2025
Case Ongoing
"Rümeysa has not been charged with any crime. Nor has there been any allegation that she is dangerous or a flight risk. Her arrest and detention appear to be based solely on her co-authorship of an op-ed in her school newspaper, The Tufts Daily, in March 2024. Rümeysa’s arrest and detention are designed to punish her speech and chill the speech of others."

"Because Rümeysa suffers from asthma, her family and friends worried that she could become ill without access to her medication... Counsel learned that she had suffered an asthma attack while en route to Louisiana."

Of course…. But we are an exceptional nation!

Which means that we take exception to those who would call us an authoritarian country.

We may act like an authoritarian country, clamp down on the press, sue law firms that represent Dear Leader’s enemies, banish words, banish scientific studies with which we disagree, and banish people who have not committed crimes to hellhole prisons across the globe.

But we still wave Old Glory down by the courthouse, and we’re still free to buy our favorite brand of beer (as long as it’s not ‘woke’)

We're learning more about this abduction.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/27/us/rumeysa-ozturk-d...

The state department revoked her visa on March 21 but she was not notified until she received a notice to appear from ICE after her arrest on March 25, the petition says.

So she didn't know her visa had been revoked, denying her the opportunity to take any action, including leaving the country voluntarily to avoid arrest and detention. She never had the chance to comply with the visa revocation.

Judge Denise Casper wrote in the order that Ozturk “shall not be removed from the United States until further order from this court.” Casper’s order directs immigration authorities to stop deportation proceedings against Ozturk until she can determine whether the Boston court has jurisdiction to decide if Ozturk was lawfully detained.

So the courts are taking action. We will have to see if the Trump administration actually follows a judge's order.

Another video on the story, which includes Columbia University student Khalil and a Venezuelan couple who are here legally and have been arrested twice anyway.

Just under 7 minutes from Rachael Maddow - as fair warning to those who are triggered by strong women in positions of some power who tell the truth instead of repeating the lies that you've become accustomed to.
