The Negro’s “America” Frank Barbour Coffin My country, ’tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Would I could sing; Its land of Pilgrim’s pride Also where lynched men died With such upon her tide, Freedom can’t reign. My native country, thee The world pronounce you free Thy name I love; But when the lynchers rise To slaughter human lives Thou closest up thine eyes, Thy God’s above. Let Negroes smell the breeze So they can sing with ease Sweet freedom’s song; Let justice reign supreme, Let men be what they seem Break up that lyncher’s screen, Lay down all wrong. Full accountability for all participants in Jan. 6 is not only a legal and moral necessity, but offers us a chance to break a toxic historical pattern that dates at least back a century and a half. We can only do so by pursuing full accountability for all participants in the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Our history is one of trying to push past divisions at times of great national tension and strife. We have erred in forgiving wrongdoers for the sake of unity at the expense of other key members of our polity. Whenever we choose to ignore what has happened for the sake of “just moving on,” we cause untold harm. And on the national level, when we do this, it generally reinscribes white supremacy.

The next time you hear something like that on you phone's or car's GPS mapping app, think of Dr. Gladys West. The article is a few years old but little has changed except racists would call her a DEI hire.

While billions of people use GPS in their car or on their phone, many don't know that a Black woman is behind the creation of it. That's right, Dr. Gladys West, a Black woman from Virginia was instrumental in creating the device we use today.
