The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Dope didn't respond to post pointing out that the UK military appears consistently ranked as one of the strongest in the world,

No, I didn't respond to that. Because the assertion is laughable.

Maybe I'm on the of the top 10 best hockey players in all of Ecuador. So what?

The Brits have let their armed forces degrade in ridiculous ways:
theguardian.com - UK armed forces sad state ministry of defence

The sad state of Britain’s armed forces and their inability to take on current threats was illustrated by the recent photos in Portsmouth docks of HMS Dragon, the navy’s lone destroyer available to help protect British interests that would be potential targets in the conflict in the Middle East, including the RAF base at Akrotiri in Cyprus.

I highlighted the word "lone" for you. Meaning, they have 1. One.
Wanna know why it was hung up in the yard? Because their shipyard only works 9 to 5.

You keep equating money with capability but you never manage to answer where their money goes. When confronted with hard data about readiness and deployable force you keep dodging.

You accuse me of confirmation bias while constantly ignoring points, data and links that contradict your narrative.

Let's bury this once and for all and start with their army:
nationalsecuritynews.com - The british army is in serious trouble how did this happen and what can be done about it guest writer colonel
The British Army’s regular force now stands at a mere 72,000 soldiers, the smallest it has been since the mid-Eighteenth Century.

Wowzers. Real top 10 level of military power there! Bear in mind that maybe half of those guys are combat troops. By way of comparison this is about 6x smaller than the US National Guard.

Let's skip right to UK government documents on what they have, shall we?

gov.uk - UK armed forces equipment and formations

Maritime
In the UK armed forces at 1 April 2026, there were:

9 submarines

52 vessels in the Royal Navy Surface Fleet

12 vessels in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Figure roughly half are in dry dock or a yard someplace for refits and then another quarter are in training. So they can deploy about a quarter of this. And only about 25 of those ships (maybe) are fighting ships. The Brits still have over a dozen overseas possessions; looks like they get maybe 1 ship each.

And their carriers? They can must up a proper carrier strike group...once every 3 years or so.

Air
In the UK armed forces at 1 April 2026, there were:

507 Fixed-wing platforms

249 Rotary-wing platforms

189 Uncrewed Aircraft Systems.

Of their aircraft, 124 are Typhoons. Not bad planes, just a design that dates from the 1980s. They're starting to get Lightnings.

But what about the Navy in particular?

cepa.org - The royal navy on course for national embarrassment

Right now, the Royal Navy fleet looks like a construction site. All of the major classes of warships and support ships, without exception, are in various states of retirement, repair, construction, training, or crew regeneration. Some relatively new ships are tied up alongside but uncrewed as they await sufficient trained manpower and funding to be used operationally. It’s thought that of the force of just 13 destroyers and frigates, only around four are at sea. It’s the same story with attack submarines, where only one of the five vessels is known to be operational.

Around a quarter of their strength at sea, as I said. Other ships tied up because they don't have sailors to sail them.

Here's a whole video for this board to ignore:

Mark Felton on the
The Shocking State of Britain's Navy 2026

I think he seeks out stuff like this to confirm that opinion, especially when confronted with data about the enormous defense spend and military capabilities of the various European countries.

Sorry, no. I get that this board doesn't do debate and doesn't hold the left to any kind of standard for posting facts - you guys just make up whatever you want and post it as fact to the cheers of your audience - but reality tells us a different story.
