Blue states are typically less dependent on federal government assistance. States with higher per capita GDP (often blue states) tend to be less reliant on federal funding.

It's amazing to me that the same people who are most opposed to "government handouts" and "government assistance" are often the very ones who are disproportionately receiving it and benefiting from it. Except of course, when their home states' governors helpfully decline it on behalf of all of them. <sigh>
