The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

The democrats lack the mental fortitude to stare at a pile of money and not spend it. Ain't happening. There aren't any more adults left in that party.

If they lack the mental fortitude to do that, then they'll certainly lack the mental fortitude to do what you seem to think they'll do: cut back on spending in order to avoid raising taxes. And then if (or when) the circumstances get the point where mental fortitude is no longer required, because there just isn't any more money to spend on new programs and no way to borrow more money and the programs they have to maintain need more money to function. Things that can't go on forever....won't.

Again, your initial premise was along the lines of SS was going to start running out of money, so there will need to be benefit cuts. That's the Grover Norquist theory of the case - that if you starve the government of revenue, the government will end up having to shrink their spending.

But that's a delusion. If you starve the government of revenue, the government will simply go into debt to maintain their spending. They won't shrink it, because the spending is insanely popular. Because, again, nearly all of the spending is in beloved programs. For most politicians, they know that if they cut those programs they'll be voted out of office and replaced by people who will undo the cuts - so they don't cut those programs. Because the voters don't want them cut.

The government always has the option to raise taxes. Or "profits," as President Trump might call them. If they run out of money to maintain existing spending, they don't have to cut existing spending. They can raise taxes and get more money. Given the choice between raising taxes or cutting benefits, both parties now will always choose the former.
