“ BNSF and CSX offer 'coast-to-coast' shipping, but no merger
Berkshire Hathaway's BNSF railroad and CSX are not merging, at least not right now, but today they did announce a "collaboration" to provide "seamless, efficient, coast-to-coast solutions to ship between the western and eastern U.S."
Last month, Union Pacific, which operates in the western U.S., and Norfolk Southern, which operates in the eastern U.S., announced a planned $85 billion merger that they said will create the nation's first "transcontinental" freight railroad.
Eliminating the time-consuming transfer of freight in Chicago will, UNP's CEO told investors, cut a "day or two off every transit time."
Analysts, and two hedge funds, argued BNSF (western U.S.) and CSX (eastern U.S.) would also have to merge to go coast-to-coast and remain competitive.“
