Canadian MP Charlie Angus: He blinked. He choked. Two days ago, he was telling us that if we didn’t give up our nationhood, the tariffs would stay on. Then we hit him with $125 billion in tariffs. We pulled Kentucky booze off our shelves. Then we said, “You’re getting another $25 billion right after that.”The market started to tank, and suddenly, he said, “Oh, didn’t you guys already have a plan to deal with the border back in December? I love that—I’ll take that.” This is Mr. Art of the Deal.

So much winning Dope!

Here is the thing though, one of the reasons Trump won the last election was because there is a perception he gets stuff done. Part of that is simply because Trump is willing to break the law and has a favorable Supreme Court, but part of that is perception as well. Trump is willing to throw trade with our closest neighbors into a roller coaster tizzy simply to feed the perception that he will get stuff done even if he accomplishes nothing that wasn't already happening. It doesn't matter if it has cost businesses on both sides of the border lots of time and money trying to deal with the roller coaster, Trump looks like he gets stuff done.

There will always be the dumb ass diehard cultists like Dope, BHM, and LurkerMom who will always sing Trump's praises no matter how much he picks their pocket and insults the military service of their offspring. That is part of being in the cult. True cultists are not enough to get Trump elected though. He needed to win some of the non-cultists. Middle Americans who go to work, raise children and don't have time to follow what is going on in this country beyond what they see in their Facebook feed they scroll through for 15 minutes at night before bed. These are non-political people. Trump won many of them simply because of the perception he gets stuff done.

For many people like that, this is another example of Trump looking like he got stuff done. They don't know/care enough about the details. They just see that Trump got Canada and Mexico to jump when he threatened them.

Over on the Berkshire board there is a poster who is generally non-political (though he consumes information sources that are very politically biased and make him look foolish). After what happened with Mexico and Canada, he was singing Trump's praises as a negotiator and dealmaker. He isn't a stupid person, he isn't a cultist. He just doesn't have time for the details. Trump's perception has won him over.

I play a lot of poker. Lots. As a result of playing poker I meet people from all sorts of backgrounds from all over the country. I talk to many different types of people simply because we are at a poker table for hours and that is what you do. Poker is a social game. Over the past few months I have met lots of people who voted for Trump but in no way are cultists. Sure they do not care for his bigotry or the way he treats others or his crudeness. They don't like him personally, but they like the perception that he gets things done. Just last night when I was playing, when table talk turned to current events, there was one of these people singing Trump's dealmaking skills. This person clearly didn't like Trump. Didn't even vote for him. But in his mind, Trump got stuff done with the border. Again, this wasn't a stupid person. Trump's actions helped him with the perception that he gets stuff done, even if the reality is very different.

To those ends, it wouldn't surprise me if Trump initiated these catastrophe's that he then "solved" already knowing that the endgame was already the status quo. It allowed him to feed the perception of the uninformed, unwashed masses that he gets stuff done.

Now don't get me wrong, there is a cost to him in doing this. Hundreds of companies had to deal with the increased tariffs and then back everything out when the issue was resolved days later. It cost those companies at least some resources (money and manpower) that were forced to ride the Trump roller coaster. Sure, right now none of those costs really reflect on him, but after a while of repeatedly being forced to ride the Trump roller coaster, people will get sick of it.

There is a short distance between people praising Trump for his willingness to knock stuff over in order to get things done and an epileptic bull in a China shop knocking stuff over and causing a mess. One of the reasons Trump lost in 2020 (and yes, he did lose), is that much of the electorate got tired of the drama surrounding Trump. They got tired of riding the Trump roller coaster.

All I can say is to buckle upp and keep your arms and legs inside of the car.

also experiencing a mix of politics in social (particpatory sports) settings, i can say a FEW that exhibit smarts in certain areas, but can not grok trump beyond some media perception as a 'doer, is a lack of broad intelligence at a very low threshold.

consider it not lack of details\data, such as where AI fails, but lack of AGI (in humans).
architecture insufficient, and behavior code debt insurmountable.
