The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Fiber optic networks 'sabotaged' in parts of France
It was not clear whether there was a link with the coordinated attacks that paralyzed the country's high-speed train network last Friday, hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

Most of the things attributed to "The Russians" are flights of fancy meant to advance certain political viewpoints around here. But I have it from someone I trust that the Russkies are determined to screw with the Olympics:

The French government says multiple telecommunications lines have been hit by acts of vandalism, affecting fiber lines and fixed and mobile phone lines as cities around France are hosting events for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Marina Ferrari, junior minister in charge of digital affairs, posted on X that damage in several regions overnight Sunday to Monday affected telecommunications operators. She said that led to localized impacts on access to fiber lines and fixed and mobile telephone lines.

"Fixed mobile telephone" lines I take to be cellular towers. So who would it be?

Terrorists? No. Terrorists go for symbolic targets or try to generate some kind of mass casualty event. They might do something like this but only when paired with one of the former things. So, no - that leaves state actors.

Only a state actor would have the wherewithal to a) map out where all that stuff is b) create a plan to hit it simultaneously and c) be able to place people easily who could do the job.

Iran? Iran actually has diplomatic relations with France. France has also not been super vocal about 10/7 but has supplied Naval assets to hit the Houthis.

China? China has a massive contingent at the games and places a lot of national pride on doing well. It wouldn't be in their interest to be seen doing anything like this.

Russia? Russia
-Technically doesn't have a team there
-Is upset that France has authorized usage of French weaponry to strike inside Russia, and
-Wants to send an asymmetric message to Europe that "hey, we can touch you"
