As I understand the mechanics, the notion that Biden was "forced out" is preposterous.

Not really. They gave him a choice:

1. "Voluntarily" withdraw from the Presidential campaign
2. Keep running, and be removed from office entirely via the 25th Amendment

He did not "decide on his own". They gave him a menu of painful options and he picked the least painful for him.
