For those looking to diversify away from the US, Vanguard FTSE All-World ex-US Small-Cap ETF (VSS) has some nice qualities. I have owned it for a couple years and plan to keep adding.
VSS attempts to track the performance of the FTSE Global Small Cap ex US Index.
*Diversified and not "top heavy": 4,789 stocks in the ETF with the Top 10 only making up ~4% of the ETF. This is (for me) an important differentiator compared to Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS) in which the Top 10 is heavily concentrated on Chinese and Taiwanese tech companies. Interestingly, Canada sports the highest concentration of any country in VSS (15% of ETF) being notably overweight compared to VXUS at 7% of the ETF.
*Reasonable valuation: Earnings yield of ~7%, 1.3x BV, and .9x sales.
*Dividend yield approx 3%
*Low expense ratio of 0.08%
