In a move with clear strategic implications, a Chinese state-owned company has begun rebuilding a World War II-era airfield on Woleai, a remote atoll roughly 400 miles south of Guam.

The “groundbreaking ceremony,” attended by Micronesian President Wesley Simina, signals China’s deepening presence in a region historically tied to US defense interests, Newsweek reported.

However, with Washington prioritizing aid elsewhere, China has taken the opportunity to invest in underdeveloped areas, often using infrastructure as a pathway to greater influence, Newsweek said in its report.

When we withdraw from an area, it's no surprise if they welcome someone to fill the vacuum.

We are going to be like Britain almost 100 years ago...looking around and wondering what happened to our empire. Different dynamic, but a similar outcome.
