Because science is woke, I guess.
Staff members at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were told on 30 April to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice,” according to an email seen by Nature.
The policy prevents the NSF, one of the world’s biggest supporters of basic research, from awarding new research grants and from supplying allotted funds for existing grants, such as those that receive yearly increments of money. Just two weeks ago the NSF terminated roughly 1,040 grants that would have awarded US$739 million to researchers and their institutions studying a wide range of topics, including preparing for the next pandemic.
The Trump Cult is willing to destroy America's leadership in scientific research in exchange for seeing the people they hate get hurt.

I'm sure some of the researchers are rent-seekers BUT, no doubt much of it is good worthy stuff.
This - to me --- is not America First, it is America Last.

Simpletons. They don't understand, and therefore they think it's useless. I don't think it is "woke", per se. Just getting at the pointy-heads for their "high-falootin' brainiac stuff that is stupid". Long term, we will pay a heavy price as the rest of the world surges ahead of us.**
**Just look at CERN. We were building the SCSC, and Reagan canceled it. Then CERN took the reins, and now it's not likely we will ever catch up. The epicenter of particle physics could have been in TX, but is now in Switzerland. But it was "useless pointy-head stuff", so now it's gone from our shores.

It's unlikely that Trump is cutting off all science grants. Highly unlikely.
They'll probably fund MORE things through DARPA and less crapola.

A little piece of me wants to send every Trump voter to a barber for some bloodletting and leeches the next time they’re sick.
…
Then the sane part of my brain kicks in and won’t let me actually do that. But if that’s the medical system the want to pay for, that’s the medical system they should get.
—Peter <== who notes that if Trump had received bloodletting and leeches when he had covid instead of modern state of the art treatment, we might not have these problems today.

They'll fund people who say what they want them to say. That's been made consistently clear across the administration.

They will kill off millions of conservative voters. Then the dead will vote !!!

And that is definitely NOT how scientific research is supposed to be conducted.

From the CEO of the American Assn for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), publisher of
Science:
"
Make no mistake, if Congress enacts the President’s skinny budget, the consequences for the future of our nation would be catastrophic. The United States will no longer be in the global race for R&D leadership—we will have lost it. Economic benefits will accrue to other nations. We will lose the ability to set standards, influence priorities, attract and retain talent, and determine the outcomes for the health, prosperity and security of our nation.
America is at a crossroads. It is up to our federal lawmakers to reaffirm their long-standing bipartisan support for science and technology investment by rejecting this budget."-Sudip Parikh
