Oklahoma’s state superintendent directed all public schools to teach the Bible, including the Ten Commandments.

I suppose they want to see what the current right wing Supreme Court will have to say. But really? This can't pass muster, can it?

The state superintendent, Ryan Walters, said the Bible was a “necessary historical document” that must be taught in certain grades.

And what about other religious texts?

The efforts to bring religious texts into the classroom are part of a growing national movement to create and interpret laws according to a particular conservative Christian worldview.

I was looking for the text of the 10 required by Louisiana and came across this version:

How To Comply With Louisiana’s New Ten Commandments Law
https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/how-to-comply-...

Teachers are now required to post the commandments in classrooms. But the law has some giant loopholes, and we’re here to help educators use them.

lol

The required text isn't in any Bible I know about. Which is a shame, the full biblical text makes it clear that these commandments are for a specific people:

Exodus 20: Then God spoke all these words, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before[a] me.

I've never been to Egypt, and I've never been to the "house of slavery". Don't need to read any further.

Actual text required:

The text shall read as follows:
"The Ten Commandments

I AM the LORD thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images.

Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."

All sorts of questions come to mind.
There ARE other gods, then?
WTF is a graven image? Does a statue of Jesus count?
??
No working on Saturday (or is it Sunday)?
What land was given to me?
Got to be a vegetarian?
Fair enough.
Yep
That includes politicians, yes?
Is my neighbor's husband fair game, 'cos he's pretty hot?

Well, it could be argued that if your people were Hebrews, that you would be included. Of course, that neglects that the entire book of Exodus didn't happen. There were not a significant number (i.e. tens or hundreds of thousands) of Hebrew slaves in Egypt at the time depicted in Exodus (nor is there any evidence of a throng of people marching across the desert).

There ARE other gods, then?

They believed it back then.

WTF is a graven image? Does a statue of Jesus count?

There are some denominations that eschew statuary of Jesus (or god), though they don't seem to be shy about drawing him/them.

Etc.

Yeah, I think the only things that have any value in that list are not stealing, and not bearing false witness. Everything else is rubbish.

And, as Hitchens used to say, that list never needed to be made. Human societies wouldn't have survived that long if they didn't know that stealing was bad. It is a sure thing that such activities were discouraged (and punished) long before it was codified in the Torah.

By the way, if I were a teacher, I would type it up, print it with the smallest font available, and post it. Probably could fit it on an index card. Maybe smaller. (Loophole, right?)

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

Yes, I remember that quote, because it surprised me the first time I saw it.
