In a heated exchange, Mad King Donald directly threatened to revoke funding from the state over transgender rights at a White House meeting with governors, when Janet Mills, Maine’s Democratic governor, had responded, “We’ll see you in court.”

Mad King Donald had the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) withhold funds for a child nutrition program in Maine and Maine sued the USDA last month to maintain its funding.

Yesterday, the USDA said it would halt all efforts to withhold funds for a child nutrition program in Maine.

“It’s good to feel a victory like this,” the governor said a press conference, the Portland Press Herald reported. “I stood in the White House and when confronted by the president of the United States, I told him I’d see him in court. Well, we did see him in court, and we won.”

The governor said USDA had frozen funds for a program that helps feed 172,000 children in the state, the paper reported.

The settlement says the USDA and Brooke Rollins, the secretary of agriculture, “agree to refrain from freezing, termination, or otherwise interfering with the state of Maine’s access to United States Department of Agriculture funds ... based on alleged violations of Title IX without first following all legally required procedures”.

A win's a win but, jeebus, in the reign of Mad King Donald it requires suing the federal government in order to get it to comply with the law and its own regulations.

Bullies, like Trump, are in reality just cowards. And nothing frightens a coward more than someone standing up to them.

Another indication of Trump being the schoolyard bully type is how when he gets real pushback and has to retreat, he immediately shifts blame: "It's Biden's fault"...etc.

He's not just a horrible, incompetent and unqualified POTUS, he is a truly execrable human being.

He's not just a horrible, incompetent and unqualified POTUS, he is a truly execrable human being.

And some of us knew that way back in 2016.

Of the Rep candidates who ran in 2016 (and 2024), he was easily the worst. And that's saying something, given the idiots that were running at the time. It was all on display. He was genuinely a moron (i.e. low intelligence), genuinely incompetent, clearly a narcissist, and as the other candidates dropped out, it was clear he was using the authoritarian handbook (mirroring in many ways the run-up to the 1932 German election). It was a bit later I formed the opinion that he was either a psychopath or a sociopath (in my non-professional opinion, he fits the sociopath profile a bit better).

And the Reps chose him as their leader. Three times, now. And, I'll bet, they're going to try for four (though, due to the 22nd Amendment, many/most states won't put him on the ballot, so he would have no chance of a victory in the electoral college).

The think that needs to be carried forward from here is that this is the way the system works if the AG delays filing a case against a populist politician, the Judicial System gets a huge workout if the AG is timid, and all the while we'll question if our Democracy survives. And if we can somehow buttress our norms, we should.
