Romney reserved his harshest words for freshman Senate Republican J.D. Vance of Ohio, once a strong Trump critic like Romney who has refashioned himself as a MAGA warrior. 'I don't know that I can disrespect someone more than J.D. Vance,' Romney said in 2022. Romney said he imagined confronting Vance and telling him: 'It's like, really? You sell yourself so cheap?'
Close behind are Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), whose furthering of 2020 stolen-election claims Romney seems to regard with particular disdain. 'They know better!' he said. 'Josh Hawley is one of the smartest people in the Senate, if not the smartest, and Ted Cruz could give him a run for his money.' Romney said they made a 'calculation' that 'put politics above the interests of liberal democracy and the Constitution.'
Of former vice president Mike Pence, a man who like Romney wears his religiosity on his sleeve: No one has been 'more loyal, more willing to smile when he saw absurdities, more willing to ascribe God's will to things that were ungodly than Mike Pence.'
I live in Utah and lean left. Romney is a die-hard conservative, but he's not CRAZY. He believes in the Constitution and our Democracy. But now, with his retirement, Utah will get another MAGA whacko in his place. Damn. : (

Do you have a link to this? My brother, the MAGA, was a Romney fan.

His comments have been picked up in a bunch of publications. A Romney bio is being published next month. Oct 5? And the comments indicate that he has been very open and honest about the political experiences, thoughts, and feelings that have made him so disgusted with most of his fellow Republicans.

Here's a variation with no paywall...
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/09/mitt-romne...Perhaps the most damning allegation centers on the Capitol riot, which Romney said he warned McConnell about but to no avail.
"There are calls to burn down your home, Mitch; to smuggle guns into DC, and to storm the Capitol." Romney texted McConnell at the time.
"I hope that sufficient security plans are in place, but I am concerned that the instigator'the President'is the one who commands the reinforcements
the DC and Capitol police might require."
McConnell never responded.

If Romney had any serious backing or support from what used to be the Republican party, I believe he would be out front going for it one more time. And he'd be a serious contender.
But the Republican Party is... indescribable right now, and the Democrats have the mass media in their pockets as platform mouthpieces. So, it's not surprising that he's saying, "I can't come close to fixing this - see ya."

Good luck getting through to someone in a cult.
Yes, I don't try to get through to him. We have an agreement not to talk politics because he blows up like a little Mt Vesuvius. His wife mentioned the other day that half the people at Jan 6 were FBI agents. Wonderingly I told her there were 2-3,000 people at Jan 6. My brother piped in that there were 60-80 agents there and I said nothing. I get little glimpses of how far gone he is.

No, I don't think this is at all accurate. Just look at the many objective assessments of media bias.
