We're experiencing a combination of "The Machine Stops" and "Idiocracy" at the very same time.
The Machine Stops: Humanity becomes so dependent on technology that people lose the ability to think, function, or survive without it.
Idiocracy: Intelligent, educated people have fewer children while less intelligent people have more, and average intelligence declines over generations.
One dystopia results in us no longer using our brains. The other dystopia results in there being less brain to use.
That’s a far grimmer combination than I suspect even the most pessimistic sci-fi author could have imagined.
