A topic we recently discussed. I am encouraged by the Gen Z thinking. Now if only the educational industrial complex would get behind this idea instead of preaching college all time time. Also, parents need to realize that if their kid becomes a plumber, he has not failed in life.
A few excerpts from a recent study...
ChatGPT might be hailed as the next holy grail, but there are some things it can't do, such as install a carpet or fix a home's plumbing. Yet today, there's a shortage of skilled trade talent, with applications for technical jobs dropping by 49% in 2022 compared to 2020.
.
.
.
Gen Z has a high opinion of skilled trade: 73% of the young adult survey respondents said they respect skilled trade as a career, putting it second only to medicine (77%).
.
.
.
Young people are also being steered towards college: 82% reported that they are being told going to college is the only way to be successful in life, and a third said their high school didn't have a shop class.==================
That 82% is a huge problem.

I couldn't agree more! College isn't the most productive path for everyone......not by a long shot. And we need.....NEED.....talented, competent plumbers, electricians, etc etc etc. These professions deserve respect.

So true, and these are jobs that are critical and will not be replaced by AI or overseas outsourcing in the future. Marine diesel mechanics make $150 and upwards an hour for example.

There's an old joke that when piracy stopped all the pirates became boat mechanics. I paid good money to get the skilled boat mechanics to work on my boat. These are fellows who pay money to go to manufacturers courses two weeks a year, and then do other things to keep their skills up. Worth it though.

We all agree, Gen Z does indeed get it!
"Gen Z has been reported to be "progressive and pro-government". The generation is largely in favor of LGBT rights,
gender equality, and access to abortion. Economically, Generation Z has a more favorable outlook on socialism than previous generations."
"According to a Politico survey, a 2020 Presidential election with only Gen Z voters saw Joe Biden win 51%, compared to Donald Trump's 25%."
"A worldwide Deloitte survey saw that climate change and protecting the environment top Gen Z's primary concerns, with curbing unemployment and expanding health care access not far behind."
How about that Gen Z?

Yes, there is hope for Gen Z. Not that these views won't generate other problems. Every position has consequences, intended and not. I hope I live long enough to see this generation start to dominate demographics. I'm at the tail-end of the Boomers, so maybe I will. All the older Boomers are dying-off.
