So, WH Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is a political professional. She does not view her job as in any way intervening in the substance of what Donald Trump choose to pursue as President - but she definitely is supposed to make sure that the execution of the Executive branch is moving smoothly.

Which means that this isn't a great look for her:

President Donald Trump is replacing the fourth IRS chief this year amid complaints by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that he was not consulted on the appointment after Elon Musk recommended the person, according to a White House ally and a Trump administration official familiar with the dispute.

Bessent also ousted a prominent member of Musk’s DOGE team assigned to the IRS, after a major staff reduction was set in motion at the agency.

Gary Shapley, an IRS criminal investigator and whistleblower in the Hunter Biden tax case, was tapped by Trump only days ago to temporarily lead the agency.

However, according to the people familiar with the situation, granted anonymity to share plans that have not yet been made public, Shapley was installed largely at the request of billionaire Musk, and Bessent was left completely in the dark about the decision.

This is the type of fustercluck that is her job to keep from happening. It isn't her job, and she likely doesn't think it's her job, to decide for the President who should lead the IRS. It's not even her job to referee a dispute between Musk and Bessent over who should have that job, if there is one. But it is her job to make sure that she is aware - and that Trump is aware - of any such dispute and that it gets resolved before the pick is made, not afterwards. Or that if this decision is being made without Bessent, that Trump knows it's being made without Bessent's input and has therefore decided that he'll back up the decision if Bessent squawks about it later.

Which is a Sisyphean task even in the best of times. Given the penchant of the current Executive to allow his subordinates fairly free reign so that any problems can be deflected to those subordinates and away from himself, I suspect it's basically impossible these days. As potentially the only person in the administration that could reasonably be called the adult in the room this time around, there is precious little she can do to contain the chaos. It will be interesting to see how long she will run with this job before she decides to "pursue other interests."

I really think that the press was so hard on anything that happened in the Biden admin. is because it was so competent. They had a hard-on for another Trump What-the"F" House so they could report on the constant infighting, screw ups, and incompetence. In doing so they destroyed their credibility with the segment of the population that they had still had credibility with and didn't gain it with those who didn't trust them. Unfortunately they have now helped expose all our private data to Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Vladimir Putin.
