hclasvegas: Is the greatest risk to democracy?

Oh, I know, I know: the guy who continues to tell the big lie that he actually won an election that he clearly lost, who despite losing sixty court challenges of the election results and recounts in multiple states refused to concede defeat and refused to abide by the traditional peaceful transfer of power but, instead, invited a mob to come to Washington DC on the day that the electoral ballots were to be counted and then sent that mob to the nation's Capitol to “stop the steal" and "take back their country.”

The guy who told the mob he angered that the vice president didn't do what was right and had failed them, inciting them to chant “Hang Mike Pence!” as they searched the Capitol for him, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and other congressmen and congresswomen to kidnap or harm them.

The guy who told the mob of rioters who beat police, pepper- and bear-sprayed them, severely injured them, and ran through the Capitol in search of other victims that he loved them... but only after standing by for hours doing nothing, watching the mayhem on television.

The guy who took dozens of cartons of government-owned material containing 197 of the nation's most highly-classified intelligence documents -- including Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), Special Access Program (SAP) markings, and a plan for military action against Iran.

The guy who suggested “the termination of all rules ... even those found in the Constitution.”

The guy who called American war dead “suckers” and “losers.”

The guy who refused to attend his successor's inauguration.

The guy who dozens of people who worked for him at the highest levels say is a threat to democracy, including his former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, his own former vice president Mike Pence, former Trump White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin and Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Plus John Kelly, Trump’s former chief of staff, Olivia Troye, a former Pence adviser who left the White House in 2020, and former press secretary Stephanie Grisham.

Even Bill Barr, Trump’s former attorney general.

You know, the guy who regularly compares himself to Jesus and just said he'll become a ‘Modern Day Nelson Mandela’.

So, yeah, I'm gonna' go with that guy, Donald John.

There has never been an individual more dangerous to democracy in the modern history of the United States than Donald John.

Thanks for asking.

hclasvegas: Did you watch RFK make his case ?

Yes, and RFK Jr is an idiot.

RFK Jr claims that president Biden is the first president "in history" that has used federal agencies to censor political speech by forcing media companies to censor his political critics.

Jeez, how many factual errors are in that claim? And remember, this all started with RFK Jr complaining that a Biden administration official had emailed Twitter in January 2021, asking the platform to remove Kennedy’s false post about the COVID-19 vaccine causing Hank Aaron’s death.

Aaron did not die from a COVID-19 vaccination.

Now first, evidently RFK Jr doesn't understand what true government censorship is, historically. Perhaps he's never heard of the Sedition Act (Adams and Wilson administrations). Or the Records of the Committee on Public Information.

Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower prosecuted the Communist Party of America’s leaders under the Smith Act.

Lincoln in May 1864 issued an executive order commanding Union Army Maj. Gen. John A. Dix to "arrest and imprison in any fort or military prison in your command the editors, proprietors, and publishers" of newspapers that printed a forged presidential proclamation calling for the drafting of 400,000 more troops.

Jesus, If Lincoln was president today, he would have thrown Trump's gigantic Behind in prison long ago.

Second, RFK Jr was not a political candidate at the time he referred to being "censored".

Third, Biden didn't force media companies to do anything.

Fourth, no one was silenced. Kennedy is still on Twitter today and has 2,000,000 idiots following him.

Presidential administrations have always used the power of the presidency to advance policy goals. And in the cases of a public health and safety crisis during a global pandemic or when facing the continued spread of false election claims the government has a right to address those topics through general attempts to limit the spread of dangerous or false information. That's not a threat to democracy.

The Supreme Court will decide whether the administration's actions crossed the line into coercion, but a majority of them sure seemed skeptical of that claim during March oral arguments.

RFK Jr is a nut bag, plain and simple. The Kennedy family said they'd never vote for him. Every last one.

<O>the government has a right to address those topics through general attempts to limit the spread of dangerous or false information. That's not a threat to democracy. - CO,?I>

--------------------

It is a giant threat to democracy when the government is the decider of what information is permissible for the public to discuss; With a exception for classified material, and even with classified, our government creates a lot of mistrust that could be avoided with more ready access to redacted versions of classified info.

Other than secret stuff, the best way is a free for all where all sides express their ideas and opinions including their opinion of the other guys ideas and opinions. Duke it out in public, and let the public decide what to believe and how 'the facts' should be applied to their personal circumstances. The trouble is the libs don't trust regular citizens (ignorant rubes) to make the "right" decision. So, once the elites identify the correct decision, the then attempt to use government power to enforce it on everybody.

bighairyguy: ...the best way is a free for all where all sides express their ideas and opinions...

Well, sure, like Orange Jesus said: "What do you have to lose? I hope they use it." Hydroxychloroquine, that is.

According to researchers who published their findings in the Nature scientific journal, it turned out that about 17,000 people died from using hydroxychloroquine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it was probably more, they said, since the researchers only studied the data from six countries: France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the U.S.

So, sorry, no. A public free-for-all is not the best way to handle public health information because as Trump cultists have proven time and time again: some people are just plain morons.

But that's not what the government is doing. You can discuss all you like. Any idea or opinion you have is fair game. They are trying to limit the spread of misinformation. Which I think is appropriate. But I do understand the concern. You don't what a Ministry of Truth, but you do want people to back up what they say with facts and/or science. It can be a fine line.

For me, some of it is easy. If a politician is making pronouncements about medical issues without support from the medical community, I ignore him or her. But lots of people didn't and don't. Which can be dangerous. It can literally get people killed.

The government needs to be able to prosecute dangerous liars who endanger the health and welfare of people.

The diet scammers being a major ripoff... and the guys that prey on cancer victims, for example, promoting various BS therapies.

The liars get enriched while the desperate hornswoggled patients gets dead.

They belong in jail.

Some people are just desperate for cures. They are easy marks for 'snakeoil salesmen', and lying crooks like Trump.

Other important speech restriction: restricting advertising of alcohol and banning the marketing of cigarettes to minors.

asinine rhetorical question. As if any intelligent person who pays attention to facts and reality instead of lies could possibly think Biden was a bigger threat to democracy.
