I've been catching up on some of the speeches at the DNC that I was interested in hearing. Just watched Kinzinger's address from the final night. He was well received, but more importantly, he identified exactly the problem. The Republican party has lost its way and is no longer the conservative party. It is the Trump party.

One of the commenters on the video said this:

Democrats applauding a Republican, and a Republican voting for a Democrat is so surreal. Only Kamala can make this happen. Go KAMALA!!!

I'm going to disagree. Much as I admire VP Harris and appreciate what she is attempting to do, she is not the source of this surreal alliance. The source is Donald Trump.

It is Donald Trump whose hate and fear mongering are driving people away from the Republican party. It is Donald Trump whose racism and misogyny is driving people away. It is Donald Trump whose criminality is driving people away. It is Donald Trump whose love for self over love for country is driving people away.

The sooner the remaining Republicans realize this, the sooner they can take their party back and we can again have two political parties who disagree on policy but agree that people in both parties are simply doing what they believe is best for the country. Until then, we have only one functioning political party. And that is the only party that can be trusted to use the power given to them by the people for the benefit of the whole country rather than for their personal benefit.

My hope is that this return to sanity and respect happens soon. Because trusting just one party for too long will eventually cause different, but just as severe, problems.

Kinzinger was the speaker who made this point:

He's a perpetrator who can't stop playing the victim.

Then he made this comment:

My grandfather fought behind enemy lines against armies. All that we have to do is stand up to one weak man.

Ayyyyyyy-men.

The first Watergate burglary took place on May 28, 1972. The burglary that triggered the arrest of the plumbers took place on June 17, 1972. The Washington Post began tracing links from the burglary to the Nixon campaign and the White House in August 1972 leading up to the election. IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR, partcipants in the break-in were convicted. By March 1973, more actions were traced back to top White House staff. Subsequent Congressional investigations and court activities spread into 1974 and finally a showdown occurs in August 1974 and Nixon resigns.

Despite the nature of the crimes and extensive footdragging BY NIXON, the country as a whole did not hold the Republican Party accountable. As the nature of the crimes became apparent, the public maintained its focus on NIXON as the source. Republicans participated equally in the series of Congressional investigations that divulged the entire scope and after Nixon left office, no remaining Republican in office was left tainted by Nixon's crimes. Coulda been anybody. It was our guy this time. We acted, he's gone, what's next?

That's all Republicans had to do with Trump's first impeachment. That's all Republicans had to do with his second impeachment. All they had to do was refuse any calls from area codes 561 and 728 (Palm Beach) and starve the beast of oxygen and he would have faded out of memory.

And they couldn't do that.

In reality, the problem with the above narrative is that the moral and ethical disease that was Nixon was not in fact limited to Richard Nixon and his White House staff. There was a secondary tier of Republicans aiding and abetting those tactics that remained in the Republican Party and continued warping the party's moral compass about election strategy, ends justifying means and exploiting increasing fringe ideas as means for driving disgust and apathy for the process to drive people AWAY from voting.

Remember, Nixon interefered with peace negotiations in Vietnam prior to the 1968 election. Ronald Reagan's team negotiated with the Iranian government to hold the hostages not just untl after the election but all the way to inauguration to maximize the embarrasment to Jimmy Carter and the Democratic brand as a whole as weak and ineffective. And Roger Stone and Paul Manafort met with Russian contacts abroad regarding opportunies to obtain dirt on Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

It is Donald Trump whose hate and fear mongering are driving people away from the Republican party.

Sadly, he also is attracting other people to the Rep party. Enough that his elections have been competetive.

My hope is that this return to sanity and respect happens soon. Because trusting just one party for too long will eventually cause different, but just as severe, problems.

Totally agree. Single party rule is a bad thing, no matter which party. But right now the Trumpie party isn't giving us a viable alternative. I share your hope it goes back to something resembling normal, but I'm not optimistic. I have a dread that this will last long after the convict expires.

Here's hoping for ONE party rule - it'll spread your democracy quicker than 1/6......not to mention, easier to be corrupt.

It’s like they don’t read their own posts. They hate on EVERY Republican, calling them all Nazis. And policy disagreements? Please. If you don’t toe their line you’re a Nazi, too.

Hilarious.
