If Trump cared one whit or had even a smidgen of empathy for the Comperatore family, he would never have made the statement the following day that "God prevented the unthinkable from happening". The "unthinkable" did happen for the Comperatores.
Anyone who thinks Trump actually cares about them--even a supporter who attends rallies--can put two and two together here (if they are so inclined) and get all the information they need about how much Trump cares about them. And if that isn't enough, they can ask Mike Pence, who is still with us these days, but not because Trump did anything to try to stop people from hanging him.

Absolutely true but again, it's important to look at the bigger staffing picture. It's not unheard of for a politician to reach higher office with poor people-reading skills and little or no empathy. However, it's pretty hard to win statewide or national office without employing someone on your staff or having someone in your inner circle who can act as your resident empath to prevent the REALLY tone deaf stuff from leaving your mouth or going out under your signature.
The fact that Trump's official response stated that "God prevented the unthinkable from happening" confirms Trump is literally unable to contemplate the perspective of understand the suffering of any other human being around him, even those that DIE in close proximity to him from bullets meant for him. But it also indicates there is not only NO ONE in his entire circle that HAS the accumen to be that "chargé d'empath", there is NO ONE in his entire circle even smart enough to recognize the NEED for one, even for the most crass, cynical reason.
THAT's saying something about how far off the spectrum the people willingly entering the Trump sphere are. Imagine an entire Administration of like minded individuals, hand-selected and loyalty-checked managing the government's response after a natural disaster, a terrorist event, etc.

We don't have to imagine. We've already seen it in action during the pandemic. Need masks? Go find your own. Need gloves and gowns? Go find your own. Need information? Don't listen to that scientist over in the corner, just drink bleach, stuff a light in your butt, and take this horse dewormer. Besides, it's just the flu. Get over it. Until you get the infection yourself, then go get some of the best medical care in the country - care that isn't available to anyone without power and/or money.

No need to imagine, what you are saying, describing is an Administration that is united, working together to achieve a common solution to benefit America and America’s citizens. This is what happened after the assassination attempt on Trump’s life. Instead of going off the deep end Republicans and MAGA asked for unity and tone down the rhetoric.
OTOH the democrats are in disarray, fighting and trying to give Biden the boot. The democrats have not toned down the rhetoric instead they have ramped up their nastiness.
