Waymo just updated its safety stats through June. Waymo has now completed 96 million driverless miles with a rider. Their analysis shows that Waymo is substantially safer than human drivers.

AFAIK, Alphabet hasn't release financial information specifically for Waymo. Undoubtedly it is a big cost center. But Waymo is beginning to scale fairly rapidly. It operational in six cities (if you count Silicon Valley as one city), and has announced firm expansion plans in seven more. Plus is testing in at least three more.

People often are fearful of the unknown and want to claim how much can go wrong with a driverless vehicle but the dangers with real drivers is much more significant. Cells phones, drugs, alcohol, sleepy, road rage, etc. are all behaviors that lead to accidents.
