Appearing on Fox (of course), Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins when asked how the administration is going to bring down the price of eggs, said: “How do we solve for something like this? People are sort of looking around and thinking, ‘Wow, maybe I could get a chicken in my backyard,’ and it’s awesome.”
Awesome.
Our post-agrarian society has allowed Americans to lead richer, healthier, longer, more leisure-filled lives. There’s a reason politicians a century ago promised “a chicken in every pot,” not a “chicken in every yard.”
Encouraging millions of Americans who are completely inexperienced with animal husbandry to become amateur bird farmers in the middle of a bird flu epidemic also seems like a great way to expose more humans to bird flu.
Thre's no end to the stupid in the Trump administration.

Chickens like a 16 hour day to lay an egg. During the winter they may only lay 3-4 eggs a week, and that depends on their age, the weather, and other things. So a family of four, to get an egg apiece per day, would have to have between 6-8 chickens minimum.
I don’t think that’s going to go over well with most condominium owners, apartment dwellers, HOAs, McMansion owners, or lots of others who are somewhat used to the convenience and price of stopping by the local Kroger’s for their weekly ration.
But yeah, a chicken in every pot, er, coop. Awesome.

Not.Awsome One of the complaints from expats in the Phils is the roosters next door crowing early in the morning. And they can be loud. Since they never attach the bylaws to condo contracts they have no effect, and people will raise chickens and roosters on the balcony. Now you don't need a rooster for eggs, but if you want chicks, you need a rooster. And certain bugs, etc., are attracted, and now you have potential for bird flu. I'm retired, so a rooster wouldn't bother me, but some people work at night/

And even if we were all magically to become proficient chicken farmers, the eggs laid would be the most expensive ones yet, unless perhaps if we all also became egg sellers.

One of the cool things about living on the rural Central Coast are the steady listings for free roosters on craigslist.
"We have 4 Australorp roosters free to good homes! They are very tame, hand raised so good around humans, don’t rush or act aggressively at all. Great boys, we just have too many and are hoping to find a good home for them!! Can deliver to all North County through South County!!
I wonder if the offer plucking with the delivery service? We're a good home for Chicken and dumplings!
