Bingo, our president thinks he can dictate interest rates. Mr. Market disagrees. 30 year fixed rate mortgage headed toward 7.25. IF, he deports millions of hard working undocumented willing to work ten-hour days for 8 hours pay, what’s going to happen to our cost of living, going forward? This isn’t very complicated. Trump has to listen to the smarter people around him, presidents don’t set interest rates, policy and Mr. Market do. No company invests tens of billions on projects that take years to complete IF you believe the Dems take control of the house and senate in two years. The Dems currently a small favorite to win the presidency in 2028, without a serious candidate, yet. Would WE invest tens of billions drilling and building infrastructure knowing Dem control might be 3-4 years away?

here's the problem with that. He has no smrt people around him...I'm not holding my breath...talking to friends and colleaugues around the world the last few weeks, the overall view is that the USA is in a state of collapse....the shock factor is the speed at which it has happened....

> the overall view is that the USA is in a state of collapse

I think that is why Buffett raised his cash pile. You don't have to have much of an Oracle to remember a period of time less than 10 years ago, and make some mild extrapolations based upon updated circumstances. Apple was a less than ideal holding because of how they've grown accustomed to enjoying a favorable USD compared to other currencies in nations capable of large scale advanced electronic manufacturing for their healthy margins on hardware, with premium global retail pricing supported by a halo effect around the perceived security and general goodwill towards US companies.

The US has permanently, for the near and medium term, lost a good deal of global soft power in the last month. I question future favorable trade deals, foreign tourism and immigration, availability of effectively free advanced workforce, and most importantly the desire to hold our debt. Buffett understands the value of cheap float, and TR knew to "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far". The extra-constitutional closure of USAID - and you can agree or disagree with closing it, but alternate theories of the history of separation of powers are profoundly dangerous things - is probably larger than appreciated by the market. This was the first black swan.

The second black swan has already happened in the US Treasury. First off, it has been hacked. DOGE employees are young hackers, their methods are hacking, their tools and techniques are hacking. I worked for an elite security forensics company in a technical capacity. I assume every person here is familiar with the Birthday Problem, but it goes by many names ("chain is strong as its weakest link", etc). Our national security now depends largely on trusting the judgement and resilience of a bunch of young male computer nerds with some criminal backgrounds in their late teens/early twenties to many risk including their own egos or rival humint shops' human honey pots. My bets are on sex, alcohol, and personal glory. Even 250 years ago they understood this and required the president to be at least 35 years old. As a lemma to this, even ignoring security risk, any non-fungibility of Treasury obligations by controlling remittances on a per-payee basis makes them collectively less valuable. Get ready for more expensive debt, foreign oil (at least we can rely on our reliable neighbors, valued allies, and critically important major importers of petroleum, Mexico and Canada, to help us), and foreign goods as the world questions the validity of US debt. The poor 14th amendment.

The third is in the wings in H5N1. It has been a background factor for years and has hit the early stages of exponential growth. It is were Covid 10 was in early December 2019. A campaign promise to lower the price of eggs cannot cure another novel zoonotic. Funny enough, the administration has named a competent individual to pandemic response: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/public-health/trump-nam... so I assign less weight to this outcome.

Nobody needs me writing a book here, but then you have
* social upheaval from the above factors
* greater odds of potential failure to raise the debt ceiling this spring
* a completely unknown reaction to the breakdown of US governmental norms when judicial branch is ignored in ways that far surpass FDR and Jackson.
* domestic food shortages due to rapid changes in deportation enforcement
* card toppling realignment to China in the edge of the shrinking international US sphere of influence, and that impact on US multinationals, particularly vertically integrate E&P
* the twin dangers of real trans-human AGI and collapse of the investing bubble around it
* the danger of public corruption to an efficient capitalist economy

Berkshire is a US company. It has worked with 3G, sogo shosha and so on. But the crown jewels are bets on long term US success. It will be interesting to see what Buffett does with the cash pile in his remaining years.

Pax Romana was only 200 years. Circumstances have changed, but human DNA less so. We are what we were, and have always had problems recognizing what was truly valuable and coping with loss.

an excellent summary.. I would only add a couple of rapid recent observations.

1, Avian flu has now species jumped to a cat and a human (fatal) it is mutating and its fatality rate is almost 50%. My sister is in this arena and she is very worried. If we deal with this as we delt with Covid here, we will be locked out.
2. last week monday 25% of field workers in salinas were no shows, tuesday it was 75% no show....
3. canadians are beginning to buycott US goods, some local border store numbers are 80% less sold than normal. buycotts can happen on perception, as seems here.
4. reports on X from inside government agencies speak to downloading of data onto disk drives and taking them awy by these "bro;s". where now is government nd personal data, undoubtedly some is already sold on the dark web.

I am genuinely concerned that none of this will end well, and agree WEB may again be ahead of the curve on this, but .....

Avian flu has now species jumped to a cat and a human (fatal) it is mutating and its fatality rate is almost 50%.

The CDC's website "H5 Bird Flu: Current Situation" reports "68 Confirmed Total Reported Human Cases in the United States" and "1 Death Associated with H5N1 Bird Flu Infection in the United States." That would be a fatality rate of less than 1.5% based on a very small sample size. It also reports "Person-to-person spread: None" and "Current public health risk: Low." https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/situation-summary/ind....

hummingbird, is there different or more recent data that's driving your concerns?

Hi, not hummingbird, but "Current public health risk: Low" doesn't have a strong future looking component.

Virus reproduce, mutate, and share evolved advantages extremely rapidly. Some depends on the complexity of the viral genomes and if they are dna or rna viruses, but the risk is from evolved ability to exploit shared structural proteins within a host population.

Simply, a bird may have different cellular proteins embedded in its cellular membranes than a person. The "H" and "N" in fact refer to hemagglutinin and neuraminidase which are surface proteins on the viral envelope. Protein folding modeling and prediction of binding site interactions is frontier science.

As the virus evolves rapidly, it gains functionality in terms of reproducing in hosts and those binding site competencies change. That may be in a way that makes it better adapted to spread in, cattle, bats, or felines, for example. Now these are mammalian hosts instead of avian ones.

As it evolves over generations in the time frame of single host infections, it adapts to mammalian environments. That makes crossovers to human hosts more possible, and it becomes a matter of probability and time in terms of when the unlucky mutation that allows human to human transmission possible.

Then the relentless evolutionary process the adapts the virus to the host quickly and it becomes endemic. You could expect a sars-covid-19 progression. I haven't kept an eye on the efficacy of flu vaccines or know if they'd have to be reformulated, or what the rate of drift would be early on.

I assume every person here is familiar with the Birthday Problem

I know the Birthday Problem, but until now had no idea it was meaningfully related to cybersecurity. (Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a...)

Anyhow, after a little hunting I found this, https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/birthday-attack-in-c...

which contains:

"Digital signatures can be susceptible to birthday attacks. A message m is typically signed by first computing H(m), where H is a cryptographic hash function, and then using some secret key to sign H(m). Suppose Alice wants to trick Bob into signing a fraudulent contract. Alice prepares a fair contract m and fraudulent one m’. She then finds a number of positions where m can be changed without changing the meaning, such as inserting commas, empty lines, one versus two spaces after a sentence, replacing synonyms, etc. By combining these changes she can create a huge number of variations on m which are all fair contracts.

Similarly, Alice can also make some of these changes on m’ to take it, even more, closer towards m, that is H(m) = H(m’). Hence, Alice can now present the fair version m to Bob for signing. After Bob has signed, Alice takes the signature and attaches to it the fraudulent contract. This signature proves that Bob has signed the fraudulent contract.

To avoid such an attack the output of the hash function should be a very long sequence of bits such that the birthday attack now becomes computationally infeasible.
"

Ok, got it, mostly. Thank you!

(Actually, the whole link above is worth reading)

Completely gratuitous addition follows

Speaking of learning, I found this just the other day (bolding mine):

""The best thing for being sad," replied Merlyn, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then -- to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the thing for you. Look at what a lot of things there are to learn -- pure science, the only purity there is. You can learn astronomy in a lifetime, natural history in three, literature in six. And then, after you have exhausted a milliard lifetimes in biology and medicine and theocriticism and geography and history and economics -- why, you can start to make a cartwheel out of the appropriate wood, or spend fifty years learning to begin to learn to beat your adversary at fencing. After that you can start again on mathematics, until it is time to learn to plough."

early numbers on fatality in past outbreaks.am trying to find more recent published data, but as we all know, from research to publication involves time lags.
see below wikipedia, confirms fatality rate of known outbreaks at 50% or above.

"LAUGH OUT LOUD. BESSENT, MUSK"

I would site the example of Will's response in Red Dragon to Hanibal Lecter as an example that being smart is not exactly a pre-determinant of success.....

LECTER: Then by implication you think you're smarter than I am because it was you that caught me.

WILL: No, I know I'm not smarter than you.

Lecter: Then how did you catch me?

Will: You had.... disadvantages.

Lecter: What disadvantages?

Will: You're insane!

Between 2003 and November 2024, the World Health Organization has recorded 948 cases of confirmed H5N1 influenza, leading to 464 deaths.[2] The true fatality rate may be lower because some cases with mild symptoms may not have been identified as H5N1.[3]

As we learned from covid, or relearned, really, these numbers mean nothing when people who died are thoroughly investigated, but the vast majority of people with mild or no symptoms from their infection are not tested.
