This interesting chart and comments from the Whitney Tilson morning letter.
Humm'if Apple used this $$$ to buy these CO's instead of buybacks,
it would be the S&P 8 :)

What Apple spent repurchasing shares may be greater than the market cap of 492 companies in the S&P 500, but it's not greater than the *combined* market cap of 492 companies in the S&P 500.

What I find interesting about that chart is not the substantial slide in the share count since 2011 which we all know about, but the astounding dilution prior to that, by about 46% 2000-2012.
The inflection point starting the down trend is not long after the resignation of Mr Jobs in 2011.
