Neither. They can both cause a lot of pain to each other, but neither one can actually be "beaten" - at the end of the day, Trump will still be President and Musk will still be one of the world's richest men (and probably the richest).

In the short run, Trump can really screw over Musk. Get the FAA to ground Space X, get NHTSA to stop his Austin Robotaxi pilot program, order that Teslas no longer qualify for the EV tax credit - none of it might be legal or enforceable, but it would whack the value of his various enterprises. Meanwhile, Musk can go full attack mode on vulnerable House reps to make sure the OBBB doesn't pass. $100M in a dozen primaries would overwhelm those incumbents, and they know it - all he has to do is announce he's funding the PAC to attack any reps that vote for it and defend any that vote against it, and that puts Johnson (and thereby Trump's big bill) in a box.

Since he got involved in the political arena his stock is down, his wealth is down, his car sales are down, his reputation is down, and the only thing up are his rocket ships, which are blowing. Up, that is.

What's the point of being the richest man on earth if you can't get your own way?

I mean, none of us know what Musk is going to do - and he might indeed decide to quit the field rather than take the pain of more involvement in politics. But then again, he has to have a massive ego, and we know he's a risk-lover who really will go to great lengths if he wants to make an impact. If he genuinely thinks that defeating the OBBB is important, he'll be very motivated to do what it takes to kill it. It's not like it would cost him too much to do that.

That said, again, both of these guys can really hurt each other if they really fight it out - so the obvious "right" solution is for them to find a way to just let this go.

Yes, it would be best, but...neither of the players here are particularly known for either their maturity or emotional intelligence. Musk does seem quite put out by the OBBB, One Bureaucrat’s Bloated Boondoggle (or is it "Officially Bankrupt By Bureaucracy"?) so he may stick to his guns for a while yet.

He likes to win. He's got so much money the odd hundred million here or there doesn't even register. He could cause a lot of trouble for Trump without much effort. For example, by just giving senators cover to duck Trump on legislation Musk doesn't like, like the BBB. I'm sure there will be others. If you go up against Musk, he could drop a few million on your election opponent. Even the threat of that is probably enough.

The Dragon is currently the only American spacecraft that can take crews to the International Space Station, given issues with the Boeing Starliner. The only other spacecraft is the Russian Soyuz.

as you well know, its all theatrical talk so far. it even sounds like albaby is now saying CAN damage rather than WILL damage.

here are examples of what i do NOT consider real damage :
- trump attempting to return the tesla he supposedly bought (with cash up front i imagine, given his dislike of outstanding debt)
- changes in sentiment (with 1 downstream exception)
- threats of revoking current\future gov contracts

- stop payments of gov contracts to musk companies (yes, even if this is a pause while fought in courts)
- cuts in the budget bill on the order of what musk promised at doge (~$2t)
- musk making large\equivalent donations to gop\MAGA opposition
- sentiment causing tesla to trade @ or below intrinsic value as a car mfg (~$40 and declining) rather than technofantasy

I never thought otherwise. Musk could always have chosen not to do anything at all. He clearly chose otherwise.

He's already caused some pain for Trump by providing a lot of cover for Senators and some of the fiscal conservatives in the House to make passing the OBBB much more difficult. That makes a delay in passage far more likely, putting the July 4th goal in serious doubt....and thus extending the amount of time that ICE lacks funds relative to Trump's aspirations for it.

Both men could still choose to deescalate. What Trump can't do is cause "real damage" to Musk (to borrow your terms) without running the risk of real damage back to himself, because Musk is one of the few people who can inflict some serious damage on Trump.

good morning, keep in mind Musk uses margin, we don't know the terms or how aggressively. Musk hates Gates and Hoffman they HATE Musk, Gates has been short tesla for years. I'm surprised Gates and Hoffman haven't sued Musk for the things Musk has said about Gates , Hoffman, and the Epstein affair.

I just searched all the recorded Harris donations and couldn’t find any donations or even PACs that matched this. The World Health Organization certainly lost a large source of their funding when Trump was elected but I don’t believe WHO had any direct influence on her political funding.
