That is what it takes to sustain a belief in Trump as a competent leader.

NPR reporters visited several states to talk to people about the state of the economy and the effects, good or bad, that Trump's economic policies might be having.

As to be expected, the responses varied on people's political leanings, but not entirely.

Some people seem quite happy with Trump's management of the US economy. In Tupelo, MS, they spoke with Brian Hawkins who owns a business that makes custom sheet metal parts.

We're as busy as I've ever been. I'm trying to hire people right now.

I look at that [tariffs] like taxes. Everybody's got to pay it. You know, so just get used to it.

He says he will pass the cost on to his customers. And ultimately it will be the consumers who pay.

Mr Trump is a businessman and he knows how to make deals. And his track record has shown it and he knows what he's doing. He's telegraphing things just to get people upset, you know. He's stirring the pot. And when he does, everybody just comes just wailing, you know. And that's Okay.

Blind faith.
