It's even worse than that.
A big part of the jump in the price of his memecoin is that also he's going to invite the top 220 holders of the coin to a private dinner with the President:
President Donald Trump will have dinner with the top 220 holders of the Trump memecoin, the issuers of the cryptocurrency announced on Wednesday.
At the “intimate private dinner” on May 22 at his private club in Washington, Trump will talk about the future of crypto, according to the organizers. People who want to participate have to register, and a leader board of the top Trump coin holders will be kept to determine attendees. The top 25 Trump coin holders will also be invited to a reception before the dinner with the president, and will be given a tour of the White House.
“From April 23 to May 12, your average $TRUMP balance determines your spot,” according to the Website advertising the dinner. “Get $Trump Memes and climb the ranks.”https://archive.ph/9bmg1

Be interesting to find out who attends. Do we citizens have a right to know?

A right? I don't think so. It's probably not a government event. We might find out anyway - it's hard to have an event with several hundred people and keep it completely a secret. Especially if they stick to the commitment to set the guest list based on the $Trump ownership, since you're not vetting the attendees for discretion.

The names of many of them will probably show up in some future "insider trading" investigation- if and when this administration is ever removed from power.
But that's in a future that assumes law and order will be restored in this country, and my crystal ball grows cloudy when I ask it if that day will come soon.

I'd hazard a guess that there are a couple of well-off but relatively unknown liberals willing to spend a bit of money on $TRUMP just to get into the event and report on it.

I fear we have crossed the Rubicon of corruption. Our country may never recover from this. As most astute observers expected, Trump has turned this second term into the ultimate grifting opportunity. Disgusting.

I wonder how the GOP will try to rationalize and justify this blatant grifting. We'll find out on Monday when Congress gets back to "work". Will Thune gainsay it? Grassley? Graham? Johnson? Roy?
<smh>

The country will do fine after he is gone.
The point not mentioned is the color of the faces of the rubes who bought--what are essentially Franklin Mint NON-collectibles--expecting them to go UP in value quite significantly. That is why they are called RUBES.

Maybe not. MAGA is still out there, and is a threat to our democracy (because of their tolerance -even open support- for authoritarian policies). The Felon will go away, but the MAGA idea won't be so easy to kill.
Hopefully, the Dems don't screw the pooch in 2026 and 2028, and are then able to restore government to its former -if imperfect- glory, and prove that government can work if you don't actively try to sabotage it.

They've showed no inclination to oppose Trump. I hope they surprise me. But they are scared to death of the zombie MAGA cult that they spent decades creating.

I think in any other time we would have called it bribery, but the SCOTUS gutted the bribery laws. Now all we are left with is grifting in plain sight.

And I agree MAGA is still out there and dangerous. And all this graft at the order of the President is on display for the world to see while we screw over Ukraine.
