It's clear that the Biden-haters here will grasp at whatever straws they can to turn the positives of a major piece of bipartisan economic legislation to a negative.

The CHIPS act aims to bring the semiconductor manufacturing industry back to the US, and create thousands of jobs here.

The Semiconductor Industry Association, which analyzed announced investments from May 2020 to December 2022, claimed the CHIPS Act had led to more than 50 projects worth more than $200 billion that would create 44,000 jobs.

Arizona is in line for the largest individual investment: TSMC's $65 billion investment, which is predicted to create 6,000 jobs. Overall, more than 11,000 jobs will be created in Arizona alone, and $97.5 billion is being invested there.

Anyone here from Arizona? Let's get real, and look at what's going in the Golden Triangle.

"About 7 miles south of a massive construction site where Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s biggest chipmaker, is building three factories, one neighborhood is undergoing dramatic change. Three new apartment complexes, with a combined 852 units, have been approved for construction inside its borders. Developers and city officials say the housing is needed, in part, to meet demand driven by the semiconductor industry.

The small-business owners
Toward one corner of the Golden Triangle, there is a freshly built strip mall with a Mexican restaurant, a nail salon, a day care center and a couple of other small businesses. Its construction was part of a wave of commercial development in the area.

Kat Blaz, the owner of a Bricks & Minifigs franchise, which sells new and used Lego products, opened her store about 2˝ years ago. “I was so excited when I found out what was going in behind us,” she said, referring to the planned apartment complexes. “It’s hard nowadays for brick-and-mortar [businesses] to survive with all the online shopping, and so the fact that we can get more foot traffic is awesome,” she said.

If the goal of the Chips Act is to ramp up domestic production as fast as possible, then DEI requirements do not advance that objective at all and actually slows down progress, tat is here the negative enters the picture. To include unrelated criteria only increases the friction of making progress. Hire candidates who can do the job, period.

Yes, I live in Phoenix.

This is going to be a boon for business. The issues with TSMC were largely because they didn't want to pay Americans when they could import Taiwanese who would work a lot cheaper (per a Phoenix business journal referenced in the Wiki). Which is true...Americans aren't cheap. They thought they could get around the rules, but that didn't work. Hence the delay (but it's still going forward).

Not everyone is happy. The area was very rural. It won't be much longer. I don't blame them. I wouldn't want a fab down the street from me.

Also, Intel is planning to build two new factories (as if Fab 32 isn't huge enough!). Intel has a major presence here, and with CHIPs they will expand further. They are in Ocotillo (primarily...they have some older fabs on Chandler Blvd, but I'm not sure if they use them anymore...old technology...they may just use the office space).

As a side note, I know what's in those fabs. I wouldn't want to live within a mile of one. It is rare, but if they have an "event", they will vent outside to protect the workers. The Motorola facility they mentioned in Marketplace (built in the late 40s) is a superfund site, I believe. It was at 52nd street, and has some nasty stuff in the soil. Or it did...not sure if they cleaned it up already. There are houses and business all around that site (it's more or less in the middle of the city).

Yikes. Why must they expand in a major population center, especially with all the open desert surround the area.

good question, I was wondering the same thing. I'm sure there's a reason, people a lot
smarter than me evaluate and analyze this with some type of impact study.

The 52nd street location was on the outskirts circa 1950. The city grew around it. My company was on a dirt road for a while (before I got there...a few old-timers were telling me about it). Intel's Fab 24 and 32 were both towards the southern outskirts of Chandler. Again, the businesses and homes grew around them.

Heck, in the 1930s when Sky Harbor was new, it was in the "boonies". Now it's completely landlocked by cities (Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe). Sun City was waaaaay out in the middle of nowhere when it was built. The city has engulfed that, too. We had two air force bases (Luke and Williams). Built out in the boonies. Both are inside the city now (Williams was later converted into a civilian airport). The people that moved close to Luke now like complaining about all the aircraft...what did they expect building at the end of a military runway??

TSMC is building in the open desert. The few homes don't even have paved roads. Yet. Development of the sites, and the building of strip-centers and houses/apartments will take care of that pretty quickly.

The Phoenix metro area spreads out instead of up. A lot of big cities (like NYC) build up. Not here. It's cheaper to build outwards (at least until you run-up against Indian reservation...Scottsdale is hemmed-in by one on their east side). From my house in Gilbert to downtown Phoenix is about 30 miles. And I'm not at the extreme east side. The far west side is at least 30 miles past that.
