The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

No, the choice was the conscious decision the Brits made to essentially defund the one thing that made them a great nation in the first place. That's all on them.

That's absolutely false - we get to decide what type of relationship we choose to pursue with other countries. The Brits are in control of the decision whether to reduce the size of their Navy or not, but that is not the same choice as what we do in reaction to it. Both the U.S. and Britain downsized their naval forces after the end of the Cold War - and ironically by about the same proportion, with the U.S. reducing the fleet size from about 600 ships at the Reagan-era peak down to about 300, and Britain going from about 120 ships during the Reagan days down to 60. It's our choice whether to start destabilizing our alliance over them doing the same thing we did.

Not a great take. NATO can't project even the smallest amount of power anywhere in the world to defend its interests. Which means...we have to.

Which means...we get to. We get to be the most powerful country in the world. We get to have have unrivaled military dominance over Europe. We get to be the ones that project power globally, which means that all the power that gets projected globally reflects our choices and policy goals. The NATO countries maintain billions and billions of dollars of military forces in a subordinate role, meaning that there are massive resources available for the defense of Europe without them being an effective rival in the global projection of power. There's downsides to that (we spend more money), but there are massive upsides to that (we have a degree of power in international relations that is unrivaled by anyone in the West).

If you want to continually repeat the same point over and over and over again that Trump is a boor, bombastic, etc etc etc you are certainly free to do so. It's boring, and wallpapers over the state of the world we live in.

It doesn't wallpaper over the state of the world we live in. Trump isn't merely a boor - he's bad at international relations. He's estranging our allies at a time where the state of the world we live in requires a concerted, global effort to check the rise of China. He's decided to be maximally hostile (relative to any time in our history) towards our allies, treating them as bitter economic rivals. He's making poor choices - and repeating the same point over and over again in response ("other countries' militaries aren't big enough") isn't any kind of answer to that.

Having Canada reduce their economic relationship with the U.S. and instead pursue greater connections with the EU because we tried to exploit their interdependence on our economy is bad for the U.S.. It makes things worse for us with no real benefit. There's no upside to alienating Canada, poisoning relations both at the government and population level. It's a dumb move, and it weakens our position in trying to array a global response to the "state of the world" you mention.
