President Donald Trump is directing his team to “immediately” fire Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, whom he accused of manipulating the monthly jobs reports for “political purposes.”

The BLS’ monthly labor report Friday showed that the US economy added only 73,000 jobs in July, far below expectations. It also sharply revised down the employment growth that had been previously reported in May and June – by a combined 258,000 jobs.

After the revisions, the jobs report showed the weakest pace of hiring for any three-month period since the pandemic recession in 2020.

“She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes,” Trump said on Truth Social Friday.

Trump also continued his attacks against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in the post, saying Powell “should also be put ‘out to pasture.’”
Jeff: In the context of "be careful what you wish for" Trump may get the interest rate he wanted if employment keeps tanking. Of course, it's hard to say the economy is booming if employment is tanking and sucking the stock market with it. I wonder which teacher gave him a gold star on his careful,y researched paper in junior high school when he suggested using tariffs to fix the economy.

It's kind of ironic that the sight of shooting the messenger is very much worse for the reputation and popularity of the US government/economy than the jobs number ever was. Your kid gets a bad score on his math test, so you get filmed burning down the teacher's house?

The deal with Mr Powell is even funnier, if you have a dark sense of humour. Messing with the fed is saying "we are no longer a responsibly run country". Fair enough. But if the fed DID drop rates to 1% as demanded, it would be a billboard saying the US economy is in dire trouble. Presumably the reverse of the intended effect.

But is the root cause of the decline in employment due to rates, and will we see a rush to invest in new employees should the rates come down while the chaos continues? IMO, lower rates will have little impact on employment if the chaos continues. It's time to stop thinking traditionally, while there is someone in charge who doesn't care beyond how much he can personally pocket.

No. Business stops hiring when they see future sales being the same or declining, especially when the cost of goods goes up significantly. This requires greater "cash-now" expenditures by the business to even *get* inventory in a not-good economy.

I shouldn't expect logic from the president, but if the head of the BLS was politically motivated, why wait until now to post bad numbers with revisions in prior months? Wouldn't you just come out with bad numbers out of the gate? Also, this potentially helps him get the rate cut he wants. My forehead just has a permanent handprint on it from all the facepalming.

Because this is a warning to other workers. Tell us what we want to hear or we will publicly pillory you. Trump does not let people resign to spend more time with their family and pursue other interests.
