The treasurer for Santos' campaign reached a plea deal four days ago with prosecutors, pleading guilty to charges she fabricated numerous relatively small contributions to his campaign as well as the big $500,000 loan Santos himself gave to his campaign. The fake donations were intended to meet eligibility threshholds to obtain funding from various Republican Party PACs which want to see signs of broad interest in a candidate before wasting PAC money. The plea deal answers the obvious question everyone had about Santos. Where did a moron like him suddenly get the money to lend himself $500,000 when a year prior his net worth was something like $75k? The answer? He never had that kind of money.
One additional sign of criminal cluelessness on the treasurer's part... The contribution rule she was trying to satisfy was for $250,000 from third-party donors. Instead, she forged contributions from ten family members. This is the type of intelligence you attract with the low-IQ candidates running on the fringes. It's also the type of intelligence you attract if they somehow manage to win a seat in a safe district.
It's not that this is the biggest problem in the world right now. It's not even the biggest political problem right now. It's not even the biggest political problem in the House right now. But it somehow seems to perfectly reflect the dysfunction in our most important systems when they are addled by corruption from people this stupid. How many more world problems must come out of the woodwork requiring reason and morality while our leaders demonstrate an appalling lack of both before Americans wake up?
