At least 16 Trump administration veterans have spoken out against the reelection of Donald John or have refused to endorse him, many sharply criticizing the ex-president with terms such as "threat to democracy," "erratic," "delusional" and "narcissistic."
Deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews said she saw how Trump’s staff tried to get him to condemn the violence on January 6 for hours without success. “I witnessed staff go to President Trump to try to get him to condemn the violence,” Matthews said. “For hours, Trump refused to do anything. He didn’t want to stop it.”
“To see this many people coming out of an administration they worked for saying 'danger, don’t let that guy anywhere near the White House again, it will put our democracy in peril,' it’s a stunning thing,” said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley.Trump's former United Nations ambassador, Nikki Haley, said: "Someone who continually disrespects the sacrifices of military families has no business being commander in chief."
Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and former National Security Advisor John Bolton have said they will not vote for Trump. Esper called Trump a "threat to democracy" whose decision to skip the inauguration of President Biden was “a final act of petulance" that “tarnished our democracy.”
Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis released a statement accusing the former president of using his position to "destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens."
Trump's attorney General Bill Barr, chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis have offered strong criticism of the former president.
Brinkley said that so many people coming out of an administration they worked for saying Trump will put our democracy in peril is "a stunning thing". Presidential historians William Howell and Gil Troy said that seeing so many high-ranking former administration officials all saying that Trump is ill-suited to serve as president and represents a distinct threat to democracy is remarkable: "I can't think of a corollary, certainly in modern American history."
And yet every republican here still cannot begin to condemn Trump for removing some of the nation's most guarded intelligence documents -- including TOP SECRET//NOFORN documents -- from the White House after leaving office, refusing to return them under subpoena, lying that they had all been returned, and then conspiring to have evidence that he tried to continue to hide those documents destroyed.
Or for showing a classified national security document to visitors at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.
Or for calling American war dead losers and suckers.
Not one word of criticism, no loss of confidence.
The republican party is now the dead parrot in the famous Monty Python skit:
