Any day now, a federal judge is expected to issue a landmark ruling that could upend some of the most lucrative deals in Silicon Valley: Google’s default search contracts.

At stake is more than $26 billion a year, $20 billion of which goes to Apple. That’s nearly a quarter of Alphabet’s operating income.

Some comments in the article, that cancelling the contract would actually be good for Google.

"Any day now, a federal judge is expected to issue a landmark ruling that could upend some of the most lucrative deals in Silicon Valley: Google’s default search contracts."

I would not want to be that judge.

The DOJ's antitrust case against Google has lost relevance as the rise of AI and large language models reshapes the tech landscape. The case, primarily focused on Google's dominance in search and advertising, overlooks the transformative impact of AI-driven technologies that are redefining how users access and process information.

Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI are advancing AI models that bypass traditional search engines, offering direct, conversational answers and reducing reliance on Google's infrastructure. This shift diminishes the significance of Google's alleged monopolistic practices in search, as AI tools create new competitive dynamics. The DOJ's focus on past market structures fails to address the forward-looking reality where AI innovation, not search dominance, will drive future market power.
