South Korea's economy could fall into crisis rivalling its 1997 meltdown if the government accepts current U.S. demands in stalled trade talks without safeguards, President Lee Jae Myung told Reuters.

Seoul and Washington verbally agreed to a trade deal in July in which the U.S. would lower President Donald Trump's tariffs on South Korean goods in exchange for $350 billion in investment from South Korea, among other measures.

Commercial feasibility of $350 bln investments main trade obstacle with US, Lee tells Reuters

<Lee doesn't think Trump directed Hyundai immigration raid>

I wondered about this myself.

I don't think Trump would have ordered the Hyundai immigration raid because it was utterly stupid and contrary to Trump's own objective of getting major, job-creating foreign capital investment in the U.S.

In fact, I imagine that Trump might have been furious if/ when he learned about it. (Can't be sure he was told.) But if Trump excoriated Stephen Miller his whole anti-immigrant program would have been undermined.

So we can't know what happened. No confidence in any speculation.

Would it be considered too politically off topic to be less than 100% confident about that line of reasoning? : )

That's not to say that Mr Trump is stupid--I'm not an "ad hominem" kind of poster. Quite the contrary--it was an outstanding and brilliantly targeted piece of performative governance, political theatre at its finest. The chains were a nice touch, in the tradition of a "perp walk" with the press notified in advance because the film at 11:00 is the whole point.

Indeed, many of the most eyebrow-raising recent actions of the US administration seem to be intended primarily for their effect on certain impressionable segments of the public rather than for the purpose of rational governance within the parameters of any particular politico-philosophical view of the world, quite aside from whether you subscribe to that view or not.

To be fair, that's true of several countries lately. Boris de Pfeffel Johnson's time in the UK limelight springs to mind.

I read several days ago, and do not remember where so cannot vouch, but the gist was that the immigration boys had warrants for two, count them two illegals from south of the border, including names. When they got there with their full mechanized infantry they looked around and saw all these dang feriners, and being under pressure to meet their “quota” went freelance and rounded them up.

By the time the word got back to Washington it was all over.

As I say, I cannot vouch, but I will say my spray of reading is wide but does not include lunatic publications or websites from either the right or left. The Times, Journal, Bloomberg and Reuters form the core, and Apple News and Google News give it width. Occasionally there will be something on a social media site which I will follow, but that’s low on the frequency scale.

When you consider the knuckle draggers that are recruited to ICE with the promised $40K signing bonus; the lack of training to the task; and the payment per capita of "detainees",
the battery factory would have looked like a gold mine.
