CDC Changes Webpage to Suggest Autism–Vaccine Link
Experts warn this disinformation will harm the public
By Meaghan Lee Callaghan
The CDC has updated its website to remove the agency’s longstanding position that there is no credible evidence linking vaccines to autism. In its place, the agency has added text asserting there is not enough literature to make such a claim, and that questions remain as to whether autism may be caused in part by components of vaccines.
The page, updated Nov. 19, now states: “The claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism. The CDC website also asserts that U.S. health authorities have “ignored” studies suggesting a link and goes on to summarize vaccine research and potential future areas of study that could reveal a connection—though none currently do. Finally, the CDC website claims the Department of Health and Human Services is conducting a “comprehensive assessment of the causes of autism, including investigations on plausible biologic mechanisms and potential causal links.”
