We finally wised up by appending "or equivalent experience" to the college requirement. Since there were a lot of acronyms and technical jargon in those jobs, HR was in no position to evaluate experience, so they more or less had to send us all the applicant resumes they received since we spoke the language.
I have met people earning $350,000 plus (or so they said) who are self taught in computer areas and marveled at their ability. I've encountered polymaths on line. Loren was one of them, but I have one on my FB timeline who is an historian, recognized and published, a linguist in Polynesian languages and ancient ones too, an artist, and an engineer who worked for a recognized company that escapes my mind. He also has some species in his garden that are rare. There was another self taught guy who was running an oil field, several rigs. I was content to be where I was and work on my little things. :)
