The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

WiltonKnight: What those proclaiming "I love Democracy!" "Rule of Law" "Constitution" forget.... major legislation, especially on something as divisive on immigration takes compromise.

Well, if you actually read the article and not just the headline, you learn that it refers to a bill that has not been passed into law, has never been debated, and does not have sufficient support for passage: "Until February 2023 the bill had not been debated and as it stands, does not seem to be winning the approval of the right or left."

WiltonKnight: Sometimes you need to give to the other side, in order to get.

Right. After the so-called 'Gang of Eight' bill -- the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, or S.744 -- passed the senate with 14 republican votes in 2013, the republican-controlled House led by John Boehner wouldn't even allow it to come to the floor. House republicans would not support any path to citizenship for Dreamers and thought a comprehensive immigration bill would be a 'win' for Obama.

House republicans have become even less willing to compromise on immigration in the last ten years as the evolving influence of the Tea Party, the Freedom Caucus, and now the Trump Cult have pushed republicans further and further to the right.
