Quebec held their elections yesterday. As has been mentioned here, Carney's strategy has been to try to "unite" Canada emotionally behind his banner by going all "elbows up" (whatever that means) with the Bad Orange Man. For good measure he threw in some red meat in the form of schmoozing with the Mother Continent, Europe.
So how did it go?
apnews.com - Canada quebec electionTORONTO (AP) — The separatist Parti Québécois won Quebec’s provincial election Monday but fell short of enough seats to govern alone, returning to power with a promise to hold another referendum on independence from Canada.
The result returns Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s party to power for the first time in more than a decade but denies it the majority it sought, forcing the separatists to rely on opposition parties even as they try to revive Quebec’s independence debate.
Woof. Not well, apparently.
Carney's Liberal party did gain seats, but these came at the expense of the (former) governing party Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), who went from 92 seats...to zero. Double woof.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives now have ~20 seats and indications are they'll form a coalition with PQ to govern Quebec from the center right. Carney has to be having his 3rd Alka-Seltzer by now.
